Mental Health Technician observes and assists assigned mental health patients and helps with daily living activities, therapeutic activities, and socialization. Responsible for the overall maintenance of a therapeutic environment in the psychiatric unit and to ensure the safety of patients and staff. Being a Mental Health Technician attends and participates in group therapy, in-service education, and staff meetings. Records information about patients including vital signs, weight, and demeanor. Additionally, Mental Health Technician may communicate with the patient's family as needed. Typically requires an associate degree. Typically reports to a registered nurse (rn) or other supervisor. The Mental Health Technician works under moderate supervision. Gaining or has attained full proficiency in a specific area of discipline. Summary:
The Mental Health Technician has a responsibility to provide care and assistance to patients with mental health and substance abuse issues. This person offers therapeutic activities and builds healthy rapports with patients by providing guidance and positive influence to focus on their recovery.

* Standard Work: Mental Health Technician
- The Mental Health Technician works under the Behavioral Health Program Manager to provide therapeutic services for patients that are present to LRH in need of mental health and/or substance abuse services.
- Provide several group activities for inpatient behavioral health patient throughout the day/evening.
- Collaborate with the Recreational Therapists and Recreational Therapist Assistants to develop group topics and maintain the group schedule for all Behavioral Health Units.
- Responsible for documenting all group notes into the EMR system, ensuring accuracy and compliance with deadlines set forth by governing and accreditation agency.
- Provide education to patients about the treatment process, unit program and individual treatment plans.
- Coordinates activities required to comply with Baker Act and Marchman Act laws related to involuntary patients and voluntary patients. This includes communication with patient care team on when assistance in understanding the mental health laws are requested.
- Identifies and collaborates with the treatment team to establish individualized treatment plans for patients.
- Address all cares and concerns related to the client to the medical and/or clinical team as needed.
- Assist in continued development of the treatment program and activities. Collaborates in planning, organizing and directing therapeutic activities and programs.
- Assists on unit(s) as needed when available and in times of crisis (Codes) and performs Mental Health Assistant duties as necessary.
