  • About the Role

    The Merchant is a commodity trading position located in Charleston SC or Minneapolis, MN. This position is part of a local Trade Team that is focused on the origination of soybeans through company owned assets along the Eastern Seaboard for export to international markets. The role will require the management and build out of customer relationships externally, and work collaboratively with internal stakeholders across an internationally diverse team. The successful candidate will obtain a developed understanding of commodity market dynamics, contract management, facility optimization, and logistical flows via truck and container shipping. This role works with a provided grower list to maintain business and relationships. They will contribute to the daily operations and provide administrative support for the department to maximize efficiencies that will directly contribute to the profitability of Scoular by working collaboratively with the purchasing team.


    This position can be located in Charleston, SC or Minneapolis, MN.

    • Learn and understand Scoular's risk management tools.
    • Learn and understand market trends, key leading indicators and become proficient in understanding complex market dynamics.
    • Proficient in Scoular systems, tools, reports (CTRM, etc.).
    • Responsible for capturing supply in the specific/designated region.
    • Interact with customers, express ideas, forumlate and share opinions.
    • Formulate and articulate thoughts and insights on the market.
    • Ensure customers stay within Scoular Trade Finance’s counter party limits.
    • Develop skills to make buying and selling decisions.
    • Learn and understand local producer trends and assist in communicating this information as required.
    • Assist and/or lead execution logistics planning and strategy. Includes fundamental knowledge of truck/rail execution and commodity arbitrage.
    • Planning calls based on the purchase requirement priorities, as well as queries from the system on producers, commodities and target prices.
    • Knowledge of systems and procedures that document and support executions.
    • Develop and maintain the extensive and varied business relationships in the market place.
    • Provide customers with accurate market information and answers to questions about their business transactions, such as settlements.
    • At the direction of their Manager, add sales customers to their contract list as market familiarity increases.
    • With support of Merchandiser II and Manager start to build effective, on-going interactions with both current and potential customers.
    • Build trading rapport with orgin and destination customers.
    • Contract management including reconciling balances with customers
    • Assist team in building new relationships with new producers.

    About You:

    • College degree in business related field or equivalent experience.
    • Exceptional customer service skills and relationship building capability.
    • Ability to perform in a fast-paced environment.
    • Highly skilled in problem solving techniques.
    • Highly organized and detail oriented.
    • Ability to travel, as needed.

    Preferred

    • 1-2 years of merchandising experience.
    • Demonstrated understanding of grain markets, hedging and commodity flows.
    • Knowledge of the agricultural industry’s trading standards and procedures.
    • Demonstrated aptitude in accounting and financial practices and procedures.
