    This position is available as soon as possible and eligible for a hybrid work schedule. This is a 100%-time, permanent, twelve-month faculty position in the University Library.

    Position Description: The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign Library seeks a forward-thinking professional to serve in the position of Cataloging and Metadata Librarian. Reporting to the Head of Acquisitions and Cataloging Services (ACS) unit, the incumbent devises, documents, and promulgates cataloging policies and best practices for the Library. The Cataloging and Metadata Librarian provides leadership within the Library for all cataloging policy decisions and workflow designs by collaborating with colleagues in the Library to assess ongoing and upcoming cataloging needs.

    Duties and Responsibilities

    • Provides expertise and guidance in national and international cataloging standards within the unit and the Library;
    • Coordinates cataloging workflows within the unit and the Library;
    • Provides an expertise in Library-wide cataloging projects;
    • Works with colleagues in the Library to create and maintain internal cataloging policies and workflow documentation;
    • Conducts cataloging training for library staff in other technical and public services units as needed;
    • Contributes and updates NACO and BIBCO-level records;
    • Creates original bibliographic records in all formats following national standards;
    • Participates in and leads consortial, national, and international bibliographic initiatives and research projects;
    • Provides leadership in ways that center equitable and inclusive practices, team-building, and mentoring skills;
    • Contributes to the reputation of the Library through professional research, service, and collaboration with national and international colleagues and organizations.

    Qualifications

    Required:

    • Master’s degree in Library and Information Science from an ALA-accredited program or equivalent;
    • Minimum 2-3 years of working experience cataloging in a library technical services environment;
    • Demonstrated understanding of RDA, LC PCC Policy Statements, AACR2, Library of Congress Subject Headings, Classification systems, MARC 21 bibliographic formats, and BIBFRAME;
    • Familiarity with ExLibris Alma or similar integrated library system;
    • Demonstrated ability to work both independently and collaboratively within a diverse community;
    • Evidence of the ability to do research, publication, and service consistent with University standards for tenure and promotion.


    Preferred:

    • Experience working in an academic or research library environment;
    • Experience with ExLibris Alma and Primo, especially working with resource management and analytics;
    • Working experience cataloging serials or special formats;
    • Experience with linked data principles;
    • Experience designing or updating cataloging workflows;
    • Experience supervising employees;
    • Knowledge of foreign languages;
    • Demonstrated ability to manage and prioritize multiple cataloging projects;
    • Demonstrated initiative and proven ability to learn new technologies and adapt to developments in the profession.

    Salary and rank: Minimum starting salary for faculty positions in the Library is $60,000 and is commensurate with credentials and experience. The University of Illinois Library is committed to competitive salaries and attending to equity in compensation within the organization.

    Librarians have faculty rank, and must demonstrate excellence in librarianship, research, and university/professional/community service in order to meet university standards for tenure and promotion.     Terms of Appointment: Twelve-month appointment; 24 annual vacation days; 12 annual paid holidays; 12 annual sick-leave days (cumulative), plus an additional 13 sick-leave days (non-cumulative) available, if needed, each year; health insurance requiring a small co-payment is provided to employee (with the option to purchase coverage for spouse and dependents); required participation in State Universities Retirement System (SURS) (8% of annual salary is withheld and is refundable upon termination), with several options for participation in additional retirement plans; newly-hired employees are covered by the Medicare portion of Social Security and are subject to its deduction.
