    The immediate vacancies are permanent full-time and temporary full-time positions with the Department of Health in Pearl City.

    Microbiologist III - $4,690 to $5,713 per month (SR-20, Step D to I)
    Microbiologist IV - $5,076 to $6,177 per month (SR-22, Step D to I)

    Note: Hiring rates will be based on availability of funds, the applicant's qualifications, and other relevant factors.

    This recruitment will be used to fill current permanent full-time and temporary full-time vacancies.

    Employees appointed to temporary positions may also gain membership in the civil service upon satisfactory completion of an initial probation period of at least six months. Once you become a member of the civil service, you become eligible to apply for promotion and transfer opportunities to permanent as well as other temporary positions. You may also enjoy other rights and benefits afforded to an employee in a permanent position with the exception of return rights and placement rights associated with a reduction-in-force.

    Positions in the Microbiologist series supervise and/or perform professional scientific work in the detection, isolation, identification, cultivation, use and control of microorganisms.
     
    Level III: The Microbiologist III independently perform the full range of microbiological work in one or more areas.  A position at this level may also be assigned to research and investigational projects to carry out major segments under the guidance of a microbiologist in overall charge.  A position in this class may direct and oversee the work of lower-level professional or technical personnel as assigned and perform other related duties as assigned. 

    Level IV: The Microbiologist IV is a senior, fully independent worker level in the series. He/she conducts special investigations or research projects in one or more specialized fields of microbiology in a laboratory; and/or supervises and participates in the activity of one or more areas in the field of microbiology; and performs other related duties as assigned.

    To qualify, you must meet all of the following requirements:

    Basic Education: A bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with a major in microbiology, biology, molecular biology, molecular cell biology, medical technology, medical laboratory science, or a closely related science major.  
     
     Coursework must include a lecture and laboratory course in each of the following:
     
     1. Chemistry such as inorganic, qualitative, organic, or similar; and
     
     2. At least two (2) subject areas related to the study of microorganisms such as those listed below:
     
    a. Bacteriology, immunology, serology, mycology, parasitology, molecular biology, molecular cell biology or virology;
     
    b. Food, water, dairy, soil, industrial, public health, agriculture, or applied bacteriology; or applied microbiology; or
     c. Genetics, physiology, metabolism, animal or plant physiology or pathology, cell biology, biochemistry, biophysical chemistry.
     
    Note: To be creditable, the focus and content of the course must have been substantively devoted to the required subject area.

    Specialized Experience: One (1) year for Level III, and Two (2) years for Level IV of professional experience in the detection, isolation, identification, cultivation, use and/or control of microorganisms. Such experience may have been gained in such scientific disciplines as bacteriology, immunology, serology, mycology, parasitology, virology or other related areas of science.  For the III and IV levels, at least one (1) year of the required experience must have been comparable to the next lower level in the State service.

    Supervisory Aptitude: For Level IV, supervisory aptitude rather than actual supervisory experience may be accepted.  Supervisory aptitude is the demonstration of aptitude or potential for the performance of supervisory duties through successful completion of regular or special assignments which involve some supervisory responsibilities or aspects of supervision; by serving as a group or team leader; or in similar work in which opportunities for demonstrating supervisory capabilities exist; or by the completion of training courses in supervision accompanied by application of supervisory skills in work assignments; and/or by favorable appraisals by a supervisor indicating the possession of supervisory potential.

    Selective Certification - Specialized License: 
    Level III:  Not required.
    Level IV:  Applicants must possess or be eligible to obtain, a current Clinical Laboratory Specialist or Clinical Laboratory Technologist License issued by the State of Hawaii, Department of Health.
