Train, coach, supervise, and evaluate all Meat and Pier 14 associates. To supervise, direct and participate in all Market activities. Handles food in a safe manner and ensures department is always clean, sanitary, fresh and full. Attains budgeted sales and profit goals of the Department. Monitors and enforces all government and company regulations.

    WORKING RELATIONSHIPS:

    Positions that report to you: Asst. Meat Manager, Apprentice, Journeyman, Meat Clerk, Meat Wrapper, Seafood Handler

    PRIMARY JOB FUNCTIONS:

    • Provides prompt, efficient and friendly customer service by exhibiting caring concern and patience in all customer interactions and treating customers as the most important people in the store.
    • Smiles and greets customers in a friendly manner, whether the encounter takes place in the associate’s designated department or elsewhere in the store.
    • Genuinely thanks each customer and invites them back.
    • Assists customers by: (examples include)

    o escorting them to the products they’re looking for
    o securing products that are out of reach
    o loading or unloading heavy items
    o making note of and passing along customer suggestions or requests
    o performing other tasks in every way possible to enhance the shopping experience.

    • Answers the department telephone promptly when called upon, and provides friendly, helpful service to customers who call.
    • Works with co-workers as a team to ensure customer satisfaction and a pleasant work environment.
    • Directs and participates in all Meat Market, Pier 14, and Chopping Block activities, including but not limited to receiving, preparing, displaying, storing, and ordering product.
    • Listens to customer complaints and resolves problems as appropriate.
    • Plans and monitors production to control shrink and promote sales.
    • Attains budgeted sales and profit goals of the Department.
    • Ensures proper merchandising of product by understanding schematics, merchandising of advertised items, proper signing procedures, and meeting customer demands.
    • Ensures appropriate stocking of fresh and smoked meat/pork/poultry/seafood cases, coolers and freezers by rotating and replenishing product.
    • Orders product and supplies.
    • Checks invoices against delivered product, places product in appropriate storage location.
    • Responsible for proper inventory control through processing, pricing, ordering, stocking, and maintaining accuracy in EOE.
    • Ensures all areas of department remain organized according to “5S” standards.
    • Cuts and trims fresh meat.
    • Weighs, dates, labels and wraps fresh meat.
    • Produces fresh ground beef and pork as service levels designate. Completes ground meat log after every grind.
    • Tenderizes beef or pork as requested.
    • Prepares and completes all daily bookwork, record keeping and documentation required by Company or Store Director.

    • Cleans all Department utensils, equipment, merchandising tables and cases, food preparation surfaces, floors, doors, and walls according to sanitation schedule and standards.
    • Checks signage to ensure it is with the appropriate product and at the correct price.
    • Reports out-of-stock products to appropriate personnel.
    • Understands and practices proper sanitation procedures and ensures the work area is always clean and neat.
    • Reviews the status and appearance of product for freshness, rotating products on display for sale and in reserve areas.
    • Monitors temperatures of all display and storage units for proper holding procedures.
    • Ensures that an adequate product supply is ready and on hand by creating and following a production list.
    • Anticipates product needs for the department on a daily basis.
    • Removes trash in a timely manner.
    • Maintains strict adherence to department and company guidelines related to personal hygiene and dress.
    • Adheres to all company policies, procedures, Safety and Sanitation regulations, and individual store guidelines.
    • Reports to work when scheduled and on time.
    • Ensures that all food is handled in accordance with local health department regulations.
    • Protects associates and customers by removing potential hazards from the sales floor in a timely manner.

    SECONDARY JOB FUNCTIONS: (These are considered occasional in nature)

    • Updates price changes as needed in scales, on shelves and displays.
    • Attends company training meetings.
    • Changes labels and reloads supplies in department.
    • Performs other job related duties and special projects as required.

    SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

    • Trains, assists, and supervises department associates and performance of Company policies, procedures and standards.
    • Evaluates work performance of department associates and recommends personnel action, such as retention, promotion, transfers, disciplinary action, or dismissal.
    • Prepares weekly work schedule for department to ensure adequate coverage and service level while adhering to weekly sales and payroll budgets.
    • Monitors and enforces government and Jewel Safety and Sanitation regulations as well as wage and hour laws.

    SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED TO PERFORM JOB: (Physical demands outlined on attached PAR sheet)

    • The ability to work for prolonged periods of time in refrigerated and frozen levels of temperatures.
    • The ability to work in an environment with continuous high noise levels.
    • Must have the ability to solve practical problems and deal with multiple variables as they are presented.
    • Must be able to safely operate a power saw, box cutter, meat cutting knife, cuber, slicer, wrapper, and all cleaning equipment found in the meat department.
    • Ability to do simple addition, subtraction, copying figures, counting, and recording.
    • Possess the ability to understand and follow written, verbal or demonstrated instructions; write identifying information; request supplies orally or in writing.
    • Visual requirements include vision from less than 20 inches to more than 20 feet with depth perception, color vision (ability to identify and distinguish color), and field of vision.
    • Must be able to work shifts varying in length and times, including nights, weekends and holidays.
    • Proficient in Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel and Outlook.
    • Maintain valid food service sanitation certificate.

    WORKING CONDITIONS:
    The duties for this position are normally conducted in a store environment. Exposure to approximately 28 degrees Fahrenheit while handling products in cooler and -20 degrees Fahrenheit while handling products in the freezer. This position is exposed daily to a variety of sharp objects, cross contamination hazards, fin fish and shell fish, excessive noise, temperature extremes, dampness, vibrations, equipment movement hazards, cleaning chemicals/solvents. There is significant responsibility to maintain customer service levels and handle multiple priorities.

    Pay: $15.00 - $17.00 per hour
