Specific Duties:
1. Perform accurate and precise testing according to established procedures in Molecular Microbiology.
2. Interpret data resulting from Molecular assays and determine validity of test results.
3. Maintain accurate computerized records of valid test results according to established procedures.
4. Perform necessary quality control procedures, properly evaluate control data, and implement and document corrective action as needed.
5. Record all needed information and write up study results as required by contracts with clients.
6. Write scientific reports (abstracts, posters) when needed.
7. Operate, calibrate, maintain, and troubleshoot all instrumentation and equipment used in performance of job duties.
8. Organize work according to laboratory priorities and complete assigned responsibilities with little supervision.
9. Assist other laboratories and department employees as necessary.
10. Observe all safety measures; keep work area clean and safe.
11. Communicate with supervisor and/or co-workers in a timely manner when any problems arise.
12. Train other employees as needed.
13. Review pertinent microbiology literature, particularly that regarding molecular biology and its application regarding antimicrobial susceptibility and resistance.
14. Make recommendations regarding new technologies that would enhance IHMA’s competitive position in the field of molecular diagnostics.
15. Support the Molecular Microbiology Laboratory and IHMA Laboratories as a whole.
16. Perform other duties as assigned or needed.
Background Requirements:
1. Bachelor’s degree in Biological sciences with 4 years of hands-on laboratory experience; or Master’s degree in Biological sciences
2. Experience in molecular biology in a clinical microbiology or research laboratory
3. Proficiency with Microsoft Excel and familiarity with other Microsoft products.
4. Familiarity with higher throughput equipment (e.g. multichannel pipettors) is preferred.
5. Familiarity with short-read whole-genome sequencing is preferred.
