Morgue Attendant receives bodies of deceased patients and helps place bodies in compartment trays. Confirms identification of bodies and releases bodies as appropriate. Being a Morgue Attendant may assist pathologist in performing autopsies. Requires a high school diploma or equivalent. Additionally, Morgue Attendant typically reports to a supervisor or manager. The Morgue Attendant works under moderate supervision. Gaining or has attained full proficiency in a specific area of discipline. The primary purpose of the Morgue Assistant position is to provide adequate coverage for Anatomic Pathology, Morgue and Autopsy Services by assisting the Residents/Pathologists in the performance of autopsies and assisting in the maintenance of the Teaching Organ Library, among others.
Associate’s Degree in mortuary science required. Two (2) years’ experience as a morgue attendant is preferred. Autopsy medical terminology required. Applicants may substitute additional professional experience in a related field for the degree on a year for year basis.
