Associate Curator of Programming and Learning

  • The John Michael Kohler Arts Center is currently seeking an Associate Curator of Programming and Learning who will be responsible for conceptualizing, developing, and implementing accessible, mission-driven programming, resources, and artist residencies relating to exhibitions, collections, public programs, and other aspects of the Arts Center to engage diverse constituencies such as educators, students, lifelong learners, community partners, and family audiences. Aligning with the long-term goals of the Programming Department, this role also works with the Arts Center programmers to develop gallery and online resources, including interpretive guides, pre- and post- visit resources, curricula based on national core standards, and additional engagement tools for all visitors. This position reports to the Deputy Director of Programming.

    Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

    1. Lead the development of exhibition related resources and programs that provide an accessible entry into exhibitions and the Arts Center’s collection for current and potential audiences aligning with the Arts Center’s commitment to Diversity, Equity, Accessibility and Inclusion (DEAI). (15%)
    2. Serve as project lead on Exhibition Artist-in-Residence and Social STUDIO Artist-in-Residence programs inclusive of administrative and logistic planning, connecting the artist with various audiences, and assisting the artist before and during their residency to execute and document their project(s). (15%)
    3. Develop and facilitate curricula and programs that promote the Arts Center as an important resource to local and regional schools. (10%)
    4. Collaborate with programming staff to strategize, plan, and oversee the Social STUDIO drop-in  programming and projects and develop a menu of education initiatives such as classes, summer camps, and workshops. (10%)
    5. Lead or assist with the planning, execution, and maintenance of Community Gallery call for artists and exhibitions. (10%)
    6. Assist with the training, evaluation, strategic development, and implementation of the tour program for k-12, college, and adult groups. (10%)
    7. Develop, monitor, and adhere to department and/or organizational budgets. Perform other administrative duties i.e. writing contracts, assisting with grant proposals and reports. (10%)

    9. Develop and maintain relationships with local and regional community and museum educators that enrich the Arts Center’s education program and help create strategic partnerships. (5%)

    Qualifications:
    • BFA or MFA in Studio Art, BA or MA in Arts or Museum Education (masters preferred)
    • Three to five years of experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience in museum education, arts education, art history, or studio art
    • Additional three to five years of progressive work experience, including leading teams or projects, preferred
    • Experience with docent/training programs, such as VTS or other programs, desired.
    • Proficiency with Excel and Word processing software

    The position is office/art gallery based and noise level usually moderate.  May occasionally work inside or outside at events where noise level could be moderate to loud. 

    Hours of work include daytime hours Monday – Friday and may include evenings and occasionally Saturday and Sunday to meet staffing and/or event needs. The position works at various locations depending on the schedule. This position must be able to commute between locations if needed.
