    Location: Camp Bovey Gordon, Wisconsin

    Reports to: Director of Youth Programs

    Status: Seasonal/Intermittent (late April-early Oct), Full-Time, exempt, approx. 90 days

    Broad Scope and Purpose of Job:

    The Camp Director is responsible for delivering and coordinating services and activities for Camp Bovey during the camping season, in partnership with the Department Director who provides year-round administration and coordination support. Camp Bovey is a magical place of exploration, fun and rest that has served young people since 1949. It occupies 200 acres of woodlands in Northwestern Wisconsin deep in the heart of Hodag country, with a private lake untouched by boat motors. In recent years, Camp Bovey has undergone an exciting evolution into a healing-centered, mixed-use space that includes camping sessions for youth and families, as well as private retreats and rentals. Our peak season of camp activity is mid-June through Labor Day, with some intermittent activity in the spring and fall to open and close the camp space and program cycle.

    Essential Job Functions:

    Program Delivery and Development (30%)

    • Coordinate program delivery, including daily and weekly schedules of activities and staffing needs; standards for health, safety, and nutrition; welcoming and inclusive practices that engage diverse participants; and day-to-day oversight of camp programming (June-Aug)
    • Provide leadership and oversight of all record-keeping, including camp registration forms, data tracking in Client Track, camper surveys, and all health and safety records.
    • Maintain accurate records that ensure the privacy and confidentiality of program participants and their families, including proper use of information and photo releases.
    • Collect, track and report relevant program data to evaluate results and share outcomes with funders, agency staff, and other stakeholders in collaboration with Director.
    • Obtain and maintain necessary certifications, including: ServSafe/Food Manager (WI) and First Aid/CPR.
    • Partner with Director to identify new opportunities for program growth, establish partnerships with other community resources, educate stakeholders on relevant community issues and develop new programmatic strategies that center the needs of clients and the community.

    Staff Supervision and Training (20%)

    • Provide direct supervision, guidance, and performance evaluation to all staff, including 10-15 seasonal staff and Jr staff (age 15-18) and volunteers.
    • Oversee the planning and facilitation of staff training, in partnership with Department Director.
    • Lead staff meetings to ensure consistent and effective program delivery.
    • Approve timecards, PTO and holiday pay for direct reports.
    • Ensure safe and healthy conditions for staff and clients, responding to concerns if they arise.

    Manage Facilities (20%)

    • Ensure that buildings are in good condition and camp property is well-maintained and safe.
    • Arrange for repair and maintenance of equipment and vehicles.
    • Oversee kitchen sanitation practices in accordance with the USDA.
    • Support private rentals by ensuring facilities are in good condition prior to check-in, providing an overview of the site, being on-call for needs, & reviewing the condition of property at check-out.
    • Recruit and oversee volunteer teams to open and prepare camp facilities in the spring and close camp in the fall, in partnership with Department Director.

    Finances and Fundraising (15%)

    • Manage and monitor program expenses, based on program budget and available funds.
    • Provide accurate and timely financial records, including receipts and expense reports.
    • Provide program information, data, stories and photos to the Advancement team and Department Director to support funding proposals, fundraising campaigns, contract approval, and reports.

    Administration and Management (15%)

    • Ensure agency policies, practices, and procedures are understood and upheld by all camp staff.
    • In partnership with Department Director, ensure compliance with all relevant regulations, accreditations, and contracts, including preparation of written and physical materials, data collection, and reporting.
    • Stay apprised of and support organization’s strategic goals and initiatives.
    • Other duties as assigned.

    Qualifications


    Education and Experience

    • Degree in Youth Development, Education, Recreation, Environmental Studies, or related Human Service field; or equivalent relevant experience.
    • Preferred: Three years of experience in a residential camp setting with increasing job responsibilities.
    • Demonstrated experience effectively leading people or initiatives. Camp supervision experience preferred.
    • Understanding of financial management, evaluation, and program best practices.
    • Ability to contribute to an inclusive professional environment for staff and campers.
    • Ability to pass a background check.
    • Valid Minnesota driver’s license and ability to meet agency driving requirements.

    COVID Protocols

    • Due to the residential nature of the camp, we ask that all camp staff test for COVID at least once per week during the camper season. Tests will be provided.

    Physical Aspects of the Position

    • Must be able to assist campers in an emergency (fire, evacuation, illness, or injury) and have the physical ability to provide first aid or CPR.
    • Physical endurance including prolonged standing, some bending, stooping, and stretching. Walking and some running on uneven or sandy surfaces.
    • Must be able to lift and carry 40 pounds.
    • Requires eye-hand coordination and manual dexterity to manipulate program equipment during activities. Requires range of hearing and eyesight that allows position to document, supervise and communicate effectively with campers and staff.
    • Requires working outdoors throughout the day, in all weather conditions.
    • Willingness to live at camp, delivering program during irregular hours in the facilities provided.
    • Occasional sleeping outdoors on uneven surfaces in varying weather conditions.
    • Cell service and WiFi are extremely limited, and the position requires the ability to work up to 5 consecutive days without access to phone or internet.

    Compensation: Salaried: $12,500-$14,000, depending on qualifications. Benefits include medical, dental, HSA, FSA, life, 401K Match, paid holidays, and generous paid time off.
