Pastoral Care Director - Healthcare develops programs and oversees services designed to meet the religious and spiritual needs of patients, their families, and healthcare staff. Ensures that pastoral services are staffed so that chaplains are available to support patients and families facing difficult medical choices. Being a Pastoral Care Director - Healthcare establishes policies and procedures to facilitate optimal service delivery and ensure that emotional support, spiritual counsel, and comfort are provided. Evaluates and reviews records of counseling sessions and visitation logs to ensure compliance with professional and ethical standards. Additionally, Pastoral Care Director - Healthcare plans and coordinates with other clergy to conduct interfaith worship experiences. May perform the duties of a chaplain. Requires a master's degree. Typically reports to senior management. The Pastoral Care Director - Healthcare typically manages through subordinate managers and professionals in larger groups of moderate complexity. Provides input to strategic decisions that affect the functional area of responsibility. May give input into developing the budget. To be a Pastoral Care Director - Healthcare typically requires 3+ years of managerial experience.   • This position supports Mercy's philosophy of patient centered care by addressing the spiritual and emotional needs of patients, families, and staff. Chaplains are members of the interdisciplinary care teams and participate in the provision of holistic care.
     
    Job Duties
    • Assesses and cares for the spiritual/emotional needs of patients, families, and staff.
    • Documents patient/family assessments and activities related to care in the clinical records.
    • Participates in creating a plan of care in collaboration with the interdisciplinary care team.
    • Offers to contact local clergy/ faith communities if necessary or requested by patient/family and collaborate for support.

    Department Specific Duties
    • Practice close and timely communication with interdisciplinary team members about patient updates and changes in condition.
    • Updates the care plan accordingly to the patient/ family's needs and concerns.
    • Forms on-call schedules with the other staff chaplains.
    • Assists the patient/ family in funeral planning (and officiate at events, if/when possible).
    • Educates the patient/ family on grief and loss and coping with stress related to death/dying.
    • Promotes an understanding among the staff about spiritual and emotional aspects of the end-of-life experiences.
    • Participates in required educational and professional development events by the internal and external agencies.
    • Reports to the Manager, Pastoral Care department at Mercy Medical Center and works under the administrative(hospice care specific) guidance of the Program Manager, Hospice of Mercy.
    Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
    • Demonstrates excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
    • Functions effectively under stress or in crisis situations.
    • Possesses a high level of organizational and time-management skills.
    • Practices clear personal and professional boundaries in interactions with the patient/family during hospice care.
    • Has a working knowledge of the Ethical & Religious Directives for Catholic Healthcare Services.
    • Introduces and facilities appropriate rituals for the patient/family during hospice care.
    • Maintains confidentiality of all patient information as required by the organizational policy.
    • Relates to persons of diverse cultural and spiritual beliefs and practices.
    • Demonstrates and understanding  and commitment to the interdisciplinary philosophy.
    • Facilitates ethical consensus and decision-making with patients, families, and staff.
    Professional Experience
    • Two years clinical ministry experience preferred.
    Education
    • A Master’s degree in theology, divinity, religious studies, or pastoral ministry preferred. 
    • A unit of Clinical Pastoral Education preferred (and concrete plan to obtain additional units)
    Licensure, Certification, Registration
    • Certification by National Association of Catholic Chaplains (NACC), Association for Clinical Pastoral Education (ACPE), or Association of Professional Chaplains (APC) preferred (or certifiable status, working toward certification within two years.)
    • Iowa Dependent Adult Abuse & Iowa Child Abuse Mandatory Reporter training required.  Employee must submit certification of completed training prior to start or transfer date.
