    Purpose and Scope


    To support the Diocese of Phoenix in its mission to Encounter the Living Christ, the Director of the Office for Human Dignity facilitates the uplifting of human dignity of every human person. The Director serves as a voice in representing and responding to the people of God in their diversity. The Director seeks to foster the strategic vision of life, peace, justice, and multicultural ministries by supporting the unity of the Body of Christ while honoring and celebrating the cultural diversity of the Church. The Director works to bring all Catholics to a deeper love of Jesus Christ, and of the Catholic faith, recognizing the presence and richness of underrepresented cultures. Particular focus is given to the rapid growth of the Hispanic population in the Diocese of Phoenix. 


    Essential Job Functions

    · Develop a vision for Life, Peace, Justice, and Multicultural Ministries at the Diocese of Phoenix congruent with the pastoral and strategic plan of the diocese. Works in collaboration with diocesan leadership team to establish guidelines for program development consistent with that vision.

    · Actively partners with Diocesan leadership and parish ministry leaders across the diocese providing vision, leadership, education, pastoral support, and advocacy with the goal of developing and implementing services, programs, and trainings that support the marginalized in our diocese in accord with the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops Pastoral Plan for Pro-Life Activities, Catholic Social Teaching, and the Encyclical Evangelium Vitae.

    · Fosters inspiration, leadership, and assistance to those ministering to the life, peace, justice, and multicultural populations of the Diocese of Phoenix.

    · Stays current on all applicable social issues and policies that impact the multi-cultural community and prisons (e.g., immigrations, education, demographic changes).

    · Leads the strategic planning for the department and manages the department’s operations and staff.

    · Implements, develops, and communicates best practices on related programs and responds to issues as they develop in collaboration with the other Diocesan offices. 

    · Develops and makes available relevant training for the multi-cultural and Hispanic parish leaders.

    · Promotes programs that best support the needs of multi-cultural ministries for the Diocese, while working in collaboration with parish pastors and ministry leaders.

    · Responsible for overseeing the planning and facilitating liturgical, pastoral care, educational, and policy advocacy activities and events related to the Church’s teaching on the sanctity of all human life and the dignity of every person. 

    · Develop and manage diocesan programs to promote the Church’s teaching and Christian anthropology related to contemporary social issues.

    · Sponsor and host diocesan-level activities and events.

    · Serve as diocesan contact for requests for information and resources on Church teaching on life and human dignity.

    · Oversee the communication and implementation of national and regional pro-life and human rights initiatives that align with Catholic teaching within the diocese.

    · Assist individuals and committees within our parishes, schools, and other Catholic organizations with planning and coordinating their liturgical, pastoral care, educational, and policy advocacy activities and events.

    · Collaborates with community partners to provide related services at the local, regional, and national levels.

    · In collaboration with the Director of Worship and other Diocesan staff, establishes guidelines for sacramental and liturgical ministers in the multicultural setting. 

    · Work close with pastors to support and promote representation of Hispanic and multi-cultural parishioners on parish pastoral councils, deanery pastoral councils and the Diocesan Pastoral Council.

    · Leverage Diocesan communication resources available to enhance advocacy for the Hispanic and multi-cultural communities. 

    · In collaboration with other diocesan offices, establish guidelines for the development and formation of lay leadership to foster continuing education of church personnel ministering to the ethnic population.

    · Recruit qualified advisors to form a Multicultural Advisory Board and assist in organizing the Board and its meetings. 

    · Administer the day-to-day operations of the department and supervise office staff. 

    · Provide statistical information and research to Diocesan and parish leaders upon request. 


    Requirements

      Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required


    · Strong organizational skills including goal setting, team management and prioritization.? 

    · Excellent communication skills, including public speaking to large groups.

    · Experienced in budget administration and financial record-keeping and reporting.

    · Ability to work with confidential matters and use discretion with sensitive matters.

    · Ability to work independently with little minimal supervision.

    · Knowledge and understanding of Catholic Church doctrine including Hispanic National Encuentro, national pastoral guidelines for Hispanic and multicultural ministry, social teachings. 

    · Demonstrated ability for long range planning and a vision for the future of the ministry and programs. 

    · Working knowledge of Microsoft Office computer software programs. 


    Minimum Qualifications


    · Master’s degree in religious education or theology. 

    · Active practicing Catholic who is in full communion with the Roman Catholic Church. 

    · At least five years’ experience in Hispanic and multicultural ministry and program development at both the diocesan and parish level.

    · At least five years of supervisory experience.

    · Experience working with multicultural groups.

    · Bilingual skills Spanish/English, in both written and oral communication. 

    · Valid AZ driver’s license and the ability to travel to other locations within the Diocese for work-related duties. 


    Work Environment


    · This job operates in a professional office environment. 

    · This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, and photocopiers.


    Physical Demands


    · This is largely a sedentary role; however, some local travel work is required. This job requires the ability to lift files, open filing cabinets and bend or stand, as necessary.
