Being a Pathology Assistant may record findings or sterilize equipment. Requires a bachelor's/master's degree from an accredited program. Additionally, Pathology Assistant may require certification as a pathologist assistant. Typically reports to a pathologist. To be a Pathology Assistant typically requires 2 to 4 years of related experience. Gains exposure to some of the complex tasks within the job function. The Licensed Speech-Language Pathology Assistants at the May Institute ensure that speech and language services are provided in a progressive and thorough manner to meet the needs of the students served in the school and residential programs.
Responsibilities include:
- Working with the Speech-Language Pathologists to:
- Conduct assessments
- Work individually with students on speech and language goals
- Run social groups in classrooms
- Manage students’ AAC systems
- Train direct service staff
- Provide ongoing support and consultation to staff members
- Develop formal and informal speech and language programs
- Collaborate on IEP goals and evaluate and report on student progress
- Conduct applied research
- Caseload that allows for consults with students as well as training, collaboration, and professional development
- Dedicated time for each student's individualized needs
- Speech services delivered on a consult model, which allows for flexibility to spend time on what the student needs most each week. This can include, but is not limited to:
- Working with the students 1:1
- Observing speech programs being run by staff
- Training staff
- Probing new skills with students
- Developing speech and language programs
- Writing IEP goals
- Conducting assessments.
- Writing and training staff on speech and language programs to be run by classroom staff
- Reliable data taken on programs that allows for progress to be easily reviewed
- An environment of collaboration and support between team members
- Access to resources for professional development trainings and speech/language program materials
- Massachusetts SLPA licensure required
- Experience with Applied Behavior Analysis strongly preferred
- Experience working with children and/or adults with Autism and other developmental disabilities
- Strong written and oral communication skills
