  • General Summary

     

    Under general supervision, the school safety specialist engages in planning, implementing, and managing school safety programs, with a focus on stakeholder engagement, school climate, and threat assessment.  Primary duties include grant management, program development and coordination, threat assessment and response, and stakeholder training.

     

    Reports to:  Coordinator of Safety and Emergency Services

     

    Essential Job Functions

     

    Ensure grant compliance by maintaining accurate and complete records (financial, programmatic, etc.); meeting reporting requirements; monitoring grant activities; tracking progress towards program goals and objectives; and effectively communicating grant-related issues and concerns.

     

    Review and assess data related to the school climate, school safety, and related matters; work closely with key internal and external stakeholders to identify issues, concerns, and trends and to develop and implement evidence-based safe school strategies; and monitor and assess effectiveness of initiatives.

     

    Remain conversant of current technologies and trends (such as social media) that impact school safety; share information, as appropriate, with district and school personnel, as well as other stakeholders; and recommend strategies to reduce impact to safety and operations. 

     

    Develop, implement, and manage programs and initiatives to encourage and support stakeholder involvement in maintaining a positive school climate and a safe learning environment, with an emphasis on student engagement.

     

    Coordinate, facilitate, and participate in school safety and awareness training for key stakeholders, including school administrators, staff members, school resource officers, school security officers, students, and parents, with an emphasis on school climate; threat assessment, mitigation, and reduction; and positive student and staff support.

     

    Assist with threat assessments (behavioral, digital, etc.) to evaluate credibility, potential harm, and potential protective or mitigation measures.  Coordinate with internal and external stakeholders to implement responsive measures, assess their effectiveness, and determine appropriate post-incident actions. 

     

    Remain knowledgeable of district, community, and government resources that can be utilized to promote and maintain safe, welcoming schools.  Maintain strong working relationships with stakeholders and other entities supporting school safety initiatives.

     

    Maintain various school safety databases and programs to ensure information is accurate, current, and complete.  Ensure proper sharing of information while adhering to privacy and other restrictions.  Prepare written reports of database information as directed.

     

    Serve on district committees and teams, as assigned, to facilitate and promote school safety and security and to represent the particular interests of assigned programs.  Remain proficient in district emergency response procedures and assist with such actions when directed.

     

    Perform other related duties as directed.

     

    Qualifications

     

    Ability to: Understand, communicate effectively, and be responsive to the needs of children and adults; establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with parents, school staff, and community agencies. Learn and interpret school and district policies, regulations and procedures; Prepare comprehensive reports; Understand and follow oral and written directions; establish and maintain cooperative working relationships in a multi-tasking environment with frequent interruptions; display tact and diplomacy; effectively operate computer equipment (desktop, laptop, etc.) and use appropriate software applications. Assume responsibility and follow district procedures with minimum supervision.

     

    Effectively speak before public groups. Prepare and maintain confidential records. Understand and carry out oral and written instructions. Operate a variety of audio-visual equipment.

     

    Experience: Minimum of 5 years of direct experience in a related professional field.  Three (3) years of successful experience in public school safety/intervention programs with students, staff, parents and the community is desired.

     

    Education:  Bachelor’s degree or higher in a related field.  A combination of professional training and/or experience may be substituted for formal education.

     

    Other Relevant Information

     

    This position is funded by a grant from the U.S. Department of Justice, Bureau of Justice Assistance, for a period of three years.  Though the District intends to maintain this position beyond the grant period, continued employment is not guaranteed.

     

    This position requires frequent travel to off-site training locations and school site visits.

     

    Terms of Employment

    Full-time, Exempt, FMSD Sa1 Salary Schedule, 8 hours per day.  240-contract days.  Initial salary placement is based on a formula considering education and work experience. 

     

    Evaluation:

    Performance will be evaluated annually in accordance with provisions of the Board’s policy on evaluation of non-certified personnel.
