    I.    POSITION SUMMARY:


    The certified Recovery Specialist’s role is to support patients and family members in recovery from a substance use disorder. The Recovery Specialist will serve as a role model, mentor, advocator, and motivator to recovering individuals to help prevent relapse and promote long-term recovery. The Recovery Specialist must demonstrate an ability to share personal recovery experiences and to develop authentic peer-to-peer relationships. The Recovery Specialist works in conjunction with the Treatment Team to assist patients and families in their recovery journey through the continuum of care.  By their own life experiences, the Recovery Specialist will have learned valuable lessons about how to access and use behavioral health care services and how to manage and overcome behavioral health conditions. This experience enables them to act as role models for people who are just entering, or are early in, their own recovery.


    II.    PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:


        Assist patients in articulating personal goals for recovery using one-to-one and educational activities.   

        During the Peer-Based Recovery Support Services (P-BRSS) activities, the Recovery Specialist will support patients in identifying and creating goals and developing recovery plans with the skills, strengths, supports and resources to aid them in achieving those goals.

        Assist patients in working with their counselor and other members of their treatment team in determining the steps he/she needs to take to achieve these goals and self-directed recovery.

        Assist patients in locating and joining self-help (mutual support) groups.

        Utilize tools such as SAMSHA’s “peer-based recovery support action plan” to assist patients in creating their own individual wellness and recovery plans.  

        Work with patients individually and as a community to explore the problems of daily living in a treatment community and along their recovery journey after they leave treatment. The certified peer specialist will work with the treatment team to assist with resolution of emerging community problems.

        During individual and community gatherings, the Recovery Specialist will address negative self-talk so patients can move towards a more positive view of recovery.  

        The focus of the Recovery Specialist is holistic so patient’s educational, employment, housing, as well as other aspects of a patient’s life will be included in the long-term recovery discussion.

        With assistance from the Clinical Coordinator/Treatment Team, the Recovery Specialist will work with the patients and other treatment team staff to develop a Recovery Action Plan based on each patient’s identified goals. Recovery Action Plan will be reviewed by the Clinical Coordinator/Treatment Team and other participating treatment team staff. The Recovery Specialist will document the following on the patient’s treatment/recovery plan:

    o    identified person-centered strengths, needs, abilities, and recovery goals

    o    interventions to assist the client with reaching their goals for recovery 

    o    progress made toward goals

        The Recovery Specialist will maintain a working knowledge of current trends and developments in the mental health field by reading books, journals, and other relevant materials. The Recovery Specialist will continue to share recovery materials with others at continuing education seminars and other venues to be developed to support recovery-oriented services; and attend continuing education seminars and other in-service training when offered.

        The Recovery specialist will be required to engage in weekly supervision with a QSAP1.

        Any other duties as assigned.


    III.    ESSENTIAL JOB REQUIREMENTS: 


    A.    Education and Experience:


        High School Diploma/GED required. 

        Credentialed as a Certified Recovery Support Specialist (CRSS) by the appropriate agency within six months of being hired.

        Qualified candidates must be able to multi-task several jobs, quick to learn new tasks and accurately complete a significant amount of work processing within a reasonable timeframe and meets deadlines.  


    B.    Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:


        Knowledge of the recovery process and the ability to facilitate recovery using established standardized behavioral health processes.

        Knowledge and skill to teach and engage in basic problem-solving strategies to support individual clients in self-directed recovery.

        Knowledge of the signs and symptoms of mental illness (i.e., auditory and visual hallucinations, aggressive talk and behavior, thoughts of self-harm or harm towards others, isolation). 

        Knowledge of the signs and symptoms of substance abuse disorders (i.e., under the influence, relapse, overdose, aggressive talk and behavior, thoughts of self-harm or harm towards others, isolation). 

        Knowledge and skill sufficient to use community resources necessary to aid in patient’s recovery process.

        Knowledge of relevant laws, regulations, and Bradford Health Services policies. 

        Knowledge of and sensitivity to cultural differences and special needs of various marginalized groups, and ability to consult with other providers regarding these.

        Be an example of our core values daily and hold yourself accountable to Bradford standards. 

        Proactively identify ways to improve processes and elevate team excellence.

        Must be CPR certified and capable of administering CPR.

        Communicate effectively both verbally and in writing with other members of management, coworkers, and third parties. 

        Maintain appropriate professional boundaries and confidentiality, including a working knowledge of HIPAA and 42 C.F.R. Part 2 with respect to resident identifying information and health information.  This position has unrestricted access to identifying information and health information concerning each resident. 

        Maintain a professional demeanor and appearance, must not appear impaired or disoriented, but rather must appear alert, oriented, and responsive.

        Able to work in a constant state of alertness. 

                                                          

    C.    Other Requirements:


        If recovering, two years of continuous, verifiable sobriety (see Sobriety Policy).

        Regular attendance.

        Able to work in a cooperative manner with coworkers, managers, residents, and third parties.  

        Pass a criminal background check.  

        A valid driver’s license is required as some driving and/or transportation may be required to take patients to medical appointments, recovery social activities, and other community resources.
