Pharmacist compounds and dispenses prescribed drugs per physician's instructions in a hospital or healthcare facility setting. Consults with medical staff about potential drug interactions, patient medical history, and the use of particular medications. Being a Pharmacist responds to questions from patients about medications and dosage instructions. Ensures that all required pharmacy data is recorded and maintained and complies with all regulatory, security and hospital procedures. Additionally, Pharmacist may supervise pharmacy technicians.     POSITION DESCRIPTION:

     

    Responsible for the overall operations of the retail pharmacy, compounding and dispensing prescribed pharmaceutical products, making and supervising the preparation of liquid medicines, ointments, powders, tablets and other medications, as well as the selling of non-prescription medicines and related products, and the supervision of pharmacy technicians and/or retail personnel.

     

     

    ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

     

    • Checks the prescriptions given by medical providers for correct dosage and for drug interactions and incompatibilities;
    • Compounds prescribed medicines, and packages and labels them before dispensing to the customer;
    • Stores and preserves vaccines, serums, insulin, and other drugs which tend to spoil;
    • Safely dispenses medical and surgical products as prescribed;
    • Records prescriptions dispensed, the issue of poisons, narcotics, and other Controlled Substances;
    • Gives advice and information to customers on the use and effects of different medications;
    • Interprets and fills medical providers prescriptions for customers;
    • Verifies all patient information before filling a prescription, especially when it comes to restricted drugs;
    • Provides medicinal consultation to customers while filling a prescription and over the counter medicines when required;
    • Makes entry of prescriptions into the pharmacy database;
    • Contacts medical providers and benefits providers as necessary to process a prescription;
    • Complete third party insurance forms and other paperwork
    • Sell non-prescription drugs, and related commercial products;
    • Maintain an adequate stock of prescription and over-the-counter medications, surgical supplies, and retail merchandise
    • Maintain a system of inventory control to address overstocking, out-of-date stock, and incorrectly ordered stock
    • Remain up-to-date regarding: changes in all Federal and State laws and regulatory changes, new prescription and over-the-counter medications, and all in-stock merchandise
    • Other duties as assigned.

    • Excellent organizational skills.

     

    EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

     

    Requires a Bachelors Degree in Pharmacy and be licensed to practice pharmacy in the State of Illinois. Experience in retail pharmacy operations is desirable.
