WORK SCHEDULE
Duty hours will be dayshift Monday through Friday. Personnel will be allotted a one-hour lunch each day.
SUMMARY
Provide Clinical Registered Nurses services for Government beneficiaries at Keesler Medical Center (KMC), 81st Medical Group (81 MDG), Keesler Air Force Base (KAFB), Mississippi (MS).
ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
- Knowledge of professional care theories, principles, practices, and procedures to perform nursing assignments of moderate difficulty and experience in assessing adult and geriatric patients, as appropriate. Utilizes the nursing process as a basis for professional practice.
- Knowledge of a wide range of medical disorders/conditions, diagnostic studies and treatments, as appropriate.
- Knowledge of preventive health schedules, disease management and population health principles, and education methods.
- Knowledge of the military health care system including TRICARE health benefits or a working knowledge of the principles of fee-for-services, preferred provider network and managed care/HMO organizations.
- Knowledge of a variety of pharmacological agents used in patient treatment, the desired effects, side effects, and complications of their use to include knowledge of the administrative requirements for proper documentation of patients’ condition including disease progress, acknowledgement of teaching, and follow-up care.
- Ability to synthesize data from a variety of sources and make appropriate clinical decisions.
- Coordinates patient care through a continuum and facilitates the achievement of optimal outcomes in relation to clinical care, quality, and cost effectiveness.
- Ensures compliance with standards of care and practice IAW all established policies, procedures, and guidelines used in the MTF. Provides care within ethical and legal boundaries.
- Assesses patients, including the ability to assess/evaluate telephonically.
- Ability to recognize adverse signs and symptoms and quickly react in emergency situations.
- Ability to effectively communicate and collaborate with a diverse group of people for the purpose of informing the healthcare team of plans/actions, for teaching/education to benefit the patient/family, and for the organization.
- Excellent oral communication skills for patient/family education.
- Prescribes and communicates treatment plans IAW established cardiac clinic protocols.
- Telephone and in- person assessment/evaluation includes the determination of optimal time and location for patient management (ER, clinic, homecare) and follow-up care as required.
- Collects and assesses significant patient history information and performs all necessary patient teaching.
- Excellent written communication skills to perform accurate documentation, both written and electronic, of all activity, including telephone contacts.
- Arranges for procedures and performs telephone follow-up, as appropriate.
- Skilled in setting up, operating, and monitoring specialized medical equipment such as IV infusion pumps, cardiac monitoring devices, EKG units, oxygen analyzers, nebulizers and other clinic specific equipment.
- Ensure medication/supplies are replenished.
- Performs/assists with procedures such as bladder catheterizations, pulse oximetry, oxygen administration, nebulizer treatments, EKGs, phlebotomy, and other clinic specific procedures, IAW established protocols.
- Provides clinical oversight of all paraprofessionals involved in the provision of therapeutic treatments.
- Ensures for proper documentation and coding of procedures and treatments.
- Completes orientation and competency verification programs IAW unit guidelines.
- Serves and participates in committees, functions and other meetings as directed. Provides relevant and timely information to these groups and assists with decision-making and process improvement. Participates in customer service initiatives, quality projects, and medical readiness activities, designed to enhance health services.
- Skilled in starting IV lines and accessing ports or willingness to learn in order to assist the infusion clinic inside of Rheumatology Clinic with blood draws, infusions and injections.
- Ability to administer medications orally, intramuscularly, subcutaneously, intravenously, and topically.
- Ability to recognize adverse signs and symptoms and quickly react to emergency situations.
- Will comply with the wear, use, and maintenance of all required personal protective equipment (to include, but not limited to respiratory protection) as required to perform normal duties, as identified by Bioenvironmental Engineering occupational health surveillance.
- Maintain regular and punctual attendance.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Position consists of sitting for long periods of time, bending, kneeling, stooping, crouching, and lifting boxes weighing up to 40 pounds. Frequently uses hands/fingers for handling and working with small objects. Seeing up close, must not be color blind and must be able to wear protective eye wear. Must be able to stand while wearing up to 25 pounds of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) for up to four hours.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
Work is performed primarily indoors at a well-lit military treatment facility such as a clinic, outpatient facility or hospital. The environment is normally air conditioned, but conditions may change dependent upon circumstances. Work may need to be performed in a fast-paced environment requiring quick thinking and rapid judgements. Employee will be exposed to a wide variety of clients in differing functions, personalities and abilities. Exposure to bloodborne pathogens and bodily fluids, latex, radiation or other contaminants and safety issues. May be exposed to infection or diseases from contact with patients. Work is highly social with patients and can be stressful with a high emotional element. Decisions made may substantially impact patients and their families.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- RN shall hold a national or state nursing license that is valid and current with no limitations, stipulations or pending adverse actions. License must be unencumbered and remain in effect during contract employment.
- RN shall possess, maintain, and show proof of current certification in Basic Life Support (BLS), Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) and Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS).
- A minimum of 36 months of experience, as a clinical nurse, in any area of nursing such as Medical/Surgical within the last 48 months.
SPECIAL SKILLS
- RN shall be proficient in all forms of the English language, to include both written and verbal communications skills.
- RN shall present a professional, conservative, and neat appearance.
- RN shall report for duty in appropriate attire befitting a health care setting and having complied with socially acceptable standards of personal hygiene expected of health care workers.
- RN shall maintain a professional manner and display a positive, cooperative attitude while in the workplace
