  • A Day in the Life of a Physicist:

    The essential responsibility of the Medical Physicist for Radiation Oncology is assuring the optimum use of radiation to produce a stated diagnostic or therapeutic outcome. This responsibility includes: protection of the patient and others from potentially harmful or excessive radiation; establishment of adequate protocols to ensure accurate patient dosimetry; the measurement and characterization of radiation; the specification of dose delivered; development and direction of quality assurance programs; and assistance to the Radiation Oncologist in optimizing the balance between the beneficial and deleterious effects of radiation.

    Here Is What You Will Be Doing:

    • Maintains the standardization and calibration of therapy equipment in a manner suitable for accurate radiation dose delivery.
    • Shares oversight of radiation oncology physics program, which includes the technical direction of medical dosimetrists, therapy equipment engineers, and other physics support staff personnel. Responsible for the design, optimization, technical evaluation, and precise and accurate delivery of treatment plans.
    • Arranges for the proper maintenance of radiation-producing machines, accessories, and computerized treatment planning systems. Monitors all regulatory requirements for the NRC, FDA, OSHA, JCAHO, and CMS pertaining to the delivery and control of radiation-producing machines, accessories, and computerized treatment planning systems, as it relates to Radiation Oncology.
    • Assists in overseeing of the proper training of Radiation Therapy Staff to use radiation-producing machines, accessories, and computerized treatment planning systems.
    • Makes Brachytherapy treatment plans and participates in brachytherapy delivery procedures.
    • Takes part in SRS and SBRT CT simulation and treatment.
    • Performs SRS, SBRT, IMRT, VMAT and Brachytherapy delivery quality assurance.
    • Assists in implementing and maintaining records of safe physical use of therapy equipment.
    • Designs, in cooperation with clinicians, the routine clinical procedures for the application of the equipment.
    • Assists in the determination of radiation dose distribution in patients undergoing treatment (i.e. computer treatment planning or direct radiation dosimetric measurement).
    • Evaluates radiation therapy purchases to devise and implement new treatment methods and devices.
    • Performs acceptance testing and commissioning of new equipment.
    • Assists the radiation safety program in the therapy department, including maintenance or radio-isotope inventories, and records of isotope usage for patient brachytherapy.

    Desired Skills:

    • Ability to communicate well with a variety of medical staff including but not limited to: physicians, dosimetrists, radiation therapists, registered nurses, and departmental support staff
    • Proficiently skilled with computers
    • Knowledge and understanding of radiation physics
    • Technical ability to problem solves complex radiological equipment failures

    Here Is What You Will Need:

    • M.S. or higher in Medical Physics
    • American Board of Radiology (ABR) Certification in Radiological and/or Therapeutic Radiological Physics
    • Four (4) or more years of experience as a Medical Physicist in a Cancer Treatment Center
    • Board Certification in Therapeutic Radiological Physics

    Nice to have:

    • PhD in Medical Physics
    • Board Certified by the American Board of Radiology and Therapeutic Radiological Physics
