    The City of Auburn Community Development department is looking for a talented Plans Examiner/Building Inspector I to add to our team! This position performs technical work in the inspection of building and site improvements, which includes inspecting structural, plumbing, and mechanical construction for compliance with applicable building, development, environmental, and planning codes, adopted regulations and ordinances, and approved plans and specifications. This position makes decisions related to the acceptance and evaluation of building and other related permits; periodically will be required to perform review, evaluation, and decision of approval or denial of residential and commercial building plans and specifications for compliance with building codes, local ordinances, and construction requirements for structures in the City.

    This role is critical to the development process and operations of the department. The building team provides a vital and important role in current and long-term safety of the public and property through the administration and enforcement of building, planning, and development codes and standards.

    Primary Duties

    In this role you will do:


    • On- site inspections:
      Conduct inspections of various stages of construction to verify compliance with approved plans, codes and safety standards.
    • Plan review: Review construction plans, specifications and permit applications to ensure compliance with local, state, and federal building codes and regulations.
    • Building code compliance: Issue notices of violation and work closely with contractors, design professionals, and property owners to address compliance issues.
    • Public interaction: Respond to inquiries and complaints from property owners, developers and the general public regarding building standards and permits.
    • Documentation: Prepare detailed inspection reports, noting and code violations, deficiencies, or required corrections.

    Minimum Qualifications

    Required Qualifications:

    • Two (2) years of college-level course work in building technology or related field and two (2) years of journey-level experience in general building construction.
    • Experience as a Building Inspector or Plans Examiner in a public agency may substitute for the education and experience on a year for year basis
    OR
    • any combination of experience, certification, training, and/or education that demonstrates the ability to successfully perform the essential duties of the position.
    Required Licenses and Certifications
    • Possession and retention of a valid state Driver's License without impending loss at time of application is required.
    • Certifications from the International Code Council (ICC) as a Residential Building Inspector and Commercial Building Inspector OR applicant required to obtain certifications within first year of employment.
