Description
The controller position is accountable for the accounting and financial operations of the company. This includes the production of periodic financial reports, maintenance of an adequate system of accounting records, and a comprehensive set of controls and budgets designed to mitigate risk. The controller is also responsible for enhancing the accuracy of the company's reported financial results, ensuring that reported results comply with generally accepted accounting principles or international financial reporting standards and cash management and risk management. Oversees all employees involved in the accounting process, including accounts receivable, accounts payable, payroll, and compliance. Will also be responsible for forecasting, and budgeting as well as establishing, monitoring, and enforcing internal controls.
Responsibilities
1. Maintains and enforces a documented system of accounting policies and procedures
2. Manage outsourced functions
3. Oversee the operations of the accounting department, including the design of an organizational structure adequate for achieving the department's goals and objectives
4. Oversee the accounting operations of subsidiary corporations, especially their control systems, transaction-processing operations, and policies and procedures
5. Assisting management with important financial decisions
6. Preparing financial documents such as business reports, financial forecasts and statements to understand the financial state of business
7. Supervising employees who work under the controller in preparing financial reports and budgets
8. Monitoring a company’s financial reports and determining ways to reduce costs
9. Managing daily accounting tasks such as processing payroll and managing accounts payables and accounts receivables
10. Overseeing daily cash flow tasks
11. Having say on every financial decision, such as budgeting, reporting, and risk management in a small business.
12. Collecting and consolidating financial data
13. Supervising accounting and finance departments
14. Creating strategic plans for financial operations
15. Preparing financial statements, both internal and external
16. Ensuring compliance with applicable rules, laws, and regulations
17. Manages one direct report.
Transactions
1. Ensure that accounts payables are paid in a timely manner
2. Ensure that all reasonable discounts are taken on accounts payable
3. Ensure that accounts receivable are collected promptly
4. Ensure that periodic bank reconciliations are completed
5. Ensure that required debt payments are made on a timely basis
6. Maintain a system of controls over accounting transactions
Reporting
1. Issue timely of accurate and complete financial statements
2. Recommend benchmarks against which to measure the performance of company operations
3. Calculate and issue financial and operating metrics
4. Manage the production of the annual budget and forecasts
5. Calculate variances from the budget and report significant issues to management
6. Provide for a system of management cost reports
7. Provide financial analyses as needed, in particular for capital investments, pricing decisions, and contract negotiations
Compliance
1. Coordinate the provision of information to President and Regional Managers
2. Comply with local, state, and federal government reporting requirements and tax filings
Work location
This is a hybrid role, with the location being both WFH and our North Charleston in-office. Will be expected to travel as needed to company home office and Charleston resident is preferred but not required.
Hours
10-20 hours per week, with the ability to perform VCFO agency work to reach full-time hours, if desired.
Requirements
Bachelor's degree in accounting or business administration, or equivalent business experience and 10 years of progressively responsible experience for a major company or division of a large corporation. Preference will be given to candidates with the Certified Public Accountant or Certified Management Accountant designations. Experience with NetSuite is a plus. Insurance agency background is also a plus.
