The Position
Reporting to the hospital’s Chief Financial Officer, the Controller is generally responsible for the health system’s payroll and accounting functions, and will be a key contributor to financial planning and the development and management of economic objectives and internal controls. The Controller for this small, rural hospital is the working leader of a department of four, but will have the help and support of an interdisciplinary team. Essential functions include, but are not limited to the following:
- Reviewing and analyzing general ledger account balance and making recommendations for corrections
- Reviewing and interpreting financial records
- Compiling statistical, financial, accounting, or auditing reports for management
- Tracing and reconciling records of financial transactions
- Coordinating external and internal audits, including preparing audit schedules, coordinating audit timeline, and helping to complete audit requests
- Providing assistance with the budget process
- Assisting in implementation or modifications of accounting and other information systems
- Posting, maintaining, and reviewing daily activity into general ledger accounts by tracking on spreadsheets and posting to the system
- Performing other tasks as directed by the CEO or CFO
The Successful Candidate
The Controller is a working leader and a member of the hospital’s financial leadership team and must demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to lead this critical function while participating as an individual contributor. These competencies include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Ability to work on-site
- Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or related field preferred
- CPA preferred.
- 5 years of hospital accounting experience
- Prior experience with Meditech software
- Prior experience with Meditech Expanse preferred, in preparation for an upcoming conversion
- Ability to oscillate between strategy and execution on a day to day basis
- Desire to live and work in a rural environment
- Knowledge of the fundamental principles of continuous quality improvement
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Strong interpersonal skills and ability to communicate effectively with people at all levels of the organization
- Proficiency with MS Office, especially MS Excel, and common web applications
- Self-motivated, self-starting personality
