Police Lieutenant jobs in North Carolina
Police Lieutenant supervises a team of police sergeants and other law enforcement support staff. Responsible for officer assignments, patrol operations, and investigations. Being a Police Lieutenant prepares and reviews reports. Ensures all policies and procedures are followed. Additionally, Police Lieutenant coordinates in-service training, staff performance evaluation and development. Requires a bachelor's degree in criminal justice or closely related field. Typically reports to a chief of police or police captain. The Police Lieutenant typically manages through subordinate managers and professionals in larger groups of moderate complexity. Provides input to strategic decisions that affect the functional area of responsibility. May give input into developing the budget. To be a Police Lieutenant typically requires 3+ years of managerial experience. Capable of resolving escalated issues arising from operations and requiring coordination with other departments. Performs difficult protective service, supervisory and administrative work in the police department serving as watch commander for an assigned shift or leader of a specialized unit, such as investigations. Work includes coordination and supervision of activities within the division. Work in this class also includes a certain latitude of responsibility and accountability for deploying personnel and resources based on the needs of the area of assignment. Work performed by a lieutenant has involvement in daily patrol or investigative areas and therefore exercises regular supervision over subordinate police personnel. Work is performed under the general supervision of a police captain.
EXAMPLE OF DUTIES
Reviews daily staffing levels: calls in off duty personnel or fills in on a shift as necessary.Reviews activities from prior shifts and evaluates needs.Assigns cases for investigation.Serves as incident commander at the scene of major incidents; coordinates manpower and equipment as needed.Serves as the media contact backup about major cases or crime trends.Directs subordinates in handling of personnel matters; takes citizen complaints.Exercises regular supervision over subordinate Police personnel.Handles special projects.Works with command staff to prepare and evaluate budgetary items based upon fiscal needs.Provides technical advice to subordinates on the solution of difficult or unusual cases.Participates in the training and evaluation of division personnel.Participates in the preparation of reports and correspondence.Works closely with division Captain to ensure efficiency in communicating department goals.Serves in the absence of the Police Captain.Performs other job-related tasks as required.
SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION
Graduation from an accredited college or university with an associate’s degree, or higher, in criminal justice, business administration, or related field, with extensive experience in law enforcement (10 or more years), three years of the experience must be at the rank of sergeant. Possess an Advanced Law Enforcement certification from the State of North Carolina, or POST equivalent, if out of state.
