Police Lieutenant supervises a team of police sergeants and other law enforcement support staff. Responsible for officer assignments, patrol operations, and investigations. Being a Police Lieutenant prepares and reviews reports. Ensures all policies and procedures are followed. Additionally, Police Lieutenant coordinates in-service training, staff performance evaluation and development. Requires a bachelor's degree in criminal justice or closely related field. Typically reports to a chief of police or police captain. The Police Lieutenant typically manages through subordinate managers and professionals in larger groups of moderate complexity. Provides input to strategic decisions that affect the functional area of responsibility. May give input into developing the budget. To be a Police Lieutenant typically requires 3+ years of managerial experience. Capable of resolving escalated issues arising from operations and requiring coordination with other departments.     Essential Duties:

    • Serve as a shift supervisor.
    • Supervise, protect, instruct, train, counsel and evaluate assigned employees and inmates; schedule employees’ and inmates’ work and off-duty time; assist in formulating security and work procedures.
    • Supervise and direct searches for contraband and provide security.
    • Supervise and provide custody and security of inmates including observation of inmates and inmates assigned to work duty.
    • Read, review, and properly apply information found in inmate records which is related to the inmates’ health and safety and to the security of the facility. Provide appropriate information to other personnel.
    • Supervise the preparation and maintenance of records, forms, and reports.
    • Perform specific duties if assigned to the following areas: unit, administration, investigator, training, safety, segregation, or intake.
    • Promote the development of positive social skills through modeling appropriate work behaviors and intervening when inappropriate behaviors are observed. Provide regular feedback to staff regarding social skills procedures and intervention techniques.

    Qualifications:

    • Graduation from an accredited high school or equivalent (GED).
    • Two (2) years of corrections or related experience preferred; six (6) months of which must be in supervisory capacity.
    • A valid driver’s license in the state of Ohio with an acceptable driving record required, unless waived by management.
    • Must successfully complete all annual in-service requirements.
