    JOB DESCRIPTION:

    The mission of the New York Police Department is to enhance the quality of life in New York City by working in partnership with the community to enforce the law, preserve peace, protect the people, reduce fear, and maintain order. The NYPD strives to foster a safe city by incorporating Neighborhood Policing into all facets of Department operations, and solve the problems that create crime and disorder through an interdependent relationship between people and its police, and by pioneering strategic innovation.

    The Medical Division operates 24/7 with the primary responsibility of overseeing the health and well-being of all members of the service including both medical and psychological. The main office is located at 59-17 Junction Blvd. Queens; however, the Psychological Evaluation Section also operates off-site to monitor and evaluate uniformed members of service while sick or on restricted duty. The Psychological Evaluation Section conducts fitness for duty evaluations, trauma response, special operations support and ensures members of service receives appropriate behavioral health services.

    The NYPD Psychological Evaluation Section is seeking a qualified candidate to fill the role of Mental Health Counselor. Duties will include the following:
    • Provide screening evaluation of social, occupational, emotional, or psychological issues for referred employees.
    • Provide clinical supportive services including intake, disposition planning, and referral.
    • Conduct wellness checks of individuals involved in a critical incident.
    • Conduct group critical incident debriefing.
    • Provide supportive services ad psychoeducation for individuals at designated NYPD precincts and specialty units.
    • Attend and participate in psychological and general staff conferences and training
    • Consult with senior or executive staff on organizational issues, including work group dynamics, morale, policy implementation, and other matters
    • Research, develop, and implement training on mental health, organization, and wellness-related matters.
    • Develop appropriate materials for mental health presentations.
    • Provide embedded support services in designated boroughs and/or commands.
    - Reports directly to the PES Director, Deputy Chief Surgeon - Psychiatry, Chief NYPD Surgeon, Commanding Officer of the Medical Division

    WORK LOCATION:
    59-17 Junction Blvd. Queens

    HOURS/ SHIFT:
    Varies between 8:00 AM - 6;00 PM; Monday-Friday, Rotating Overnight On-Call


    Minimum Qualifications


    Qualification Requirements
    A Master's Degree in Social Work from an accredited school of social work.

    License Requirements
    You will be required to have a valid Licensed Master Social Worker (LMSW) or Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) license issued by the New York State Department of Education within one year of the date of appointment. This license must be presented to the appointing officer at the time of appointment or, if it is obtained after appointment, at the time it is received. This license must be maintained for the duration of your employment.

    If you fail to obtain your LMSW or LCSW license within one year of the date of appointment, your probationary period will be automatically extended for six months. If you fail to obtain the required license by the end of 18 months of service, you will be terminated.

    Special Note

    Section 424-a of the New York Social service Law requires an authorized agency to inquire whether a candidate for employment with child-care responsibilities has been the subject of a child abuse and maltreatment report. The agency has the discretion to assign a candidate who has been the subject of a child abuse and maltreatment report to a position with no child-care responsibilities.


    Preferred Skills


    Applicants should have clinical/forensic or law enforcement experience/training. Good writing skills as well as familiarity with technology is recommended as new models will be implemented. Experience with public speaking and presentation, as well as research experience is preferred but not a requirement.

    Residency Requirement


    New York City residency is generally required within 90 days of appointment. However, City Employees in certain titles who have worked for the City for 2 continuous years may also be eligible to reside in Nassau, Suffolk, Putnam, Westchester, Rockland, or Orange County. To determine if the residency requirement applies to you, please discuss with the agency representative at the time of interview.
