Police Patrol Officer is responsible for patrolling an assigned area to prevent and discover crime and to enforce regulations. Being a Police Patrol Officer requires an associate degree in criminal justice and/or additional certifications and at least 12 to 18 months of law enforcement experience. Requires Firearms Certification. Additionally, Police Patrol Officer typically reports to a police sergeant. The Police Patrol Officer works under moderate supervision.     EXAMPLE OF DUTIES
    Patrols all areas of the town in police vehicles or on foot, including the town streets and businesses, checking for unlocked doors, windows and building security; makes business location and residential house checks for possible illegal activities.Responds to crimes in progress; secures, defuses and resolves high risk felony calls; secures crime scenes for evidence searches; makes preliminary investigation and interrogates complainants, witnesses and suspects; completes complaint questionnaires; performs case follow-up and assists with investigation activities as assigned; makes arrests; responds to calls for assistance; controls traffic and enforces traffic laws and ordinances; directs traffic, assists motorists, issues citations and warnings for D.W.I.’s, D.U.I.’s, moving violation and investigates accidents involving motor vehicles; prepares and submits accident, offense, arrests and other forms and reports as necessary.Serves summons and subpoenas and keeps records of dispositions; escort’s prisoners to and from jail or from one location to another; subdues unruly prisoners when necessary.Completes comprehensive reports of daily activities and enforcement actions; Prepares for court cases and testifies in court when required.Cleans and maintains assigned fire arms and vehicles and other special equipment.

    SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION
    Disqualifying Factors A. Candidates will not be rejected because of inadvertent, minor omissions or deficiencies in their application, interviews or personal history statements. Candidates will be disqualified for intentional untruthfulness, misleading or omissions. Candidates disqualified due to an integrity issue will not be allowed to reapplyB. Candidates, who fail to appear for scheduled appointments, fail to maintain contact with the Professional Standards Division or fail to provide requested information or documents will be disqualified but eligible to reapply after six (6) monthsC. Candidates will be disqualified for any arrests, driving issues, substance abuse issues, admissions of violations or other issues that demonstrate poor judgement, poor moral character, or the tendency to violate laws or behave in a manner not consistent with the law enforcement profession. It is expected that as applicants age, their decision making ability should improve, therefore violations that occurred as a juvenile or during their younger years will be handled on a case-by-case basis. D. Candidates who may operate a City vehicle may be disqualified for driving history that demonstrates poor driving habits. Mitigating circumstances include traffic violations that are over three years old where there was not a previous pattern of poor driving and adolescent driving habits that did not continue into adulthood. Aggravating circumstances include driving while impaired, eluding police officers, negligent accidents, incidents of road rage, previous revocations or recent violations. Candidates may be reconsidered after they have established a good driving history. E. The military history of a candidate will be investigated. The standard shall be an “Honorable Discharge.” General Discharges may be considered based on the reason for discharge. Mitigating circumstances include incidents that do not impinge on the moral character of the candidate. Aggravating circumstances include incidents of insubordination, drug usage, and violations of military law. F. Candidates may be disqualified for having a poor or erratic employment history. A poor employment history includes recommendations from past employers or co-workers that indicate the candidate is not suited for employment in the law enforcement field, failing to comply with rules, unauthorized absences, poor performance in assigned duties, quitting without notice, insubordination, termination for cause, periods of unemployment, frequent job changes that indicate unreliability, etc. Candidates may be reconsidered after they have established a good work history. G. Candidates with previous law enforcement experience may be disqualified for discipline for excessive force, reckless and careless conduct during emergency vehicle operation, a history of discipline that indicates poor judgement, criminal behavior including drug use while employed as a police officer, lying, and discriminatory conduct indicating bias. H. Candidates with a history of failure to maintain financial responsibility may be disqualified. Consideration may be taken for circumstances beyond the candidate’s control. Candidates with a credit history indicating theft or embezzlement may be disqualified. Candidates may be reconsidered after they have established a good credit history.I. In relation to drug use, candidates shall preferably not have: 1. Used marijuana within three (3) years of appointment2. Used marijuana other than for experimentation3. Sold, produced, cultivated or transported marijuana for sale4. Used marijuana while employed as a police officer or Telecommunicator5. Used dangerous drugs or narcotics within seven (7) years of appointment6. Used dangerous drugs or narcotics other than for experimentation7. Sold, produced or transported for sale, any dangerous drugs or narcotics8. Unlawfully used dangerous drugs or narcotics while employed as a police officer or Telecommunicator9. The use of marijuana exceeding twenty (20) times total or exceeding five (5) times since the age of twenty-three (23) years old is presumed to be greater than experimentation10. The use of dangerous drugs or narcotics exceeding five (5) times total or exceeding one (1) time since the age of twenty-three (23) years old is presumed to be greater than experimentation.
