Police Patrol Officer is responsible for patrolling an assigned area to prevent and discover crime and to enforce regulations. Responsible for responding to calls, taking necessary action at the scene of crime or disturbance, conducting investigations, making arrests, testifying in court, and completing reports/forms and routine paperwork. Being a Police Patrol Officer requires an associate degree in criminal justice and/or additional certifications and at least 12 to 18 months of law enforcement experience. Requires Firearms Certification. Additionally, Police Patrol Officer typically reports to a police sergeant. The Police Patrol Officer works under moderate supervision.     Job Description
    SUMMARY:
    Protect life and property of South Plains College. Perform general duty police work through the enforcement of laws and college rules and regulation.
    ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
    Must act and perform without direct supervision and to make independent decisions as to the appropriate action taken in certain situations such as infractions of college rules and regulations.
    Familiarizes self with SPC campuses and builds rapport with students and staff.
    Reports hazards to the appropriate agencies.
    Control hostile and non-hostile crowds at sporting events, school functions or emergency situations.
    Renders first aid at traffic collisions. Investigate traffic collisions to determine cause and to determine if a crime has been committed.
    Directs and reroutes traffic around fire or other disruptions.
    Patrol areas on foot or in a vehicle to observe and detect criminal or suspicious activity.
    Provide traffic enforcement to observe and address violations of traffic law.
    Conducts arrests for law violations where appropriate and necessary.
    Issues citations in lieu of arrest where appropriate and necessary.
    Maintains proficiency in the use of police related equipment and weapons.

    QUALIFICATIONS:

    EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:
    High school diploma or general education degree (GED).
    Must hold a current Peace Officer license issued by the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement.
    Prior law enforcement experience is preferred.
    LANGUAGE SKILLS:
    Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of students, faculty, staff and the public.
    MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:
    Must possess basic arithmetic skills. Ability to perform these operations using units of American money and weight measurement, volume, and distance.
    REASONING ABILITY:
    Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.
    CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:
    Valid Texas Driver’s License is required.

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus. The employee is occasionally required to lift property and persons, and must be able to twist, bend, conduct searches, enter and exit a vehicle, and make forcible arrests.
