Police Patrol Officer is responsible for patrolling an assigned area to prevent and discover crime and to enforce regulations. Responsible for responding to calls, taking necessary action at the scene of crime or disturbance, conducting investigations, making arrests, testifying in court, and completing reports/forms and routine paperwork. Being a Police Patrol Officer requires an associate degree in criminal justice and/or additional certifications and at least 12 to 18 months of law enforcement experience. Requires Firearms Certification. Additionally, Police Patrol Officer typically reports to a police sergeant. The Police Patrol Officer works under moderate supervision.     Position Summary:
    Under general supervision of the Police Sergeant, provides work direction and backup to other officers on shift, patrols assigned area, responds to dispatched calls for service, enforces traffic and safety zones, investigates traffic accidents and other crimes, prepares reports documenting incidents and investigations, interacts with the citizens, and participates in specialized teams to protect life and property and assure the safety of the public. Maintains confidentiality of all privileged information.

    Minimum Qualifications:
    • High School Diploma or GED.
    • Two years law enforcement experience demonstrating increasing levels of responsibility.
    • Must be twenty-one years of age.
    • Must be a United States Citizen.
    • Must possess and maintain a New Mexico Law Enforcement Certification in accordance with New Mexico Department of Public Safety standards, including yearly firearms qualifications. External applicant must possess a New Mexico Law Enforcement Certification in accordance with New Mexico Department of Public Safety standards, including yearly firearms qualifications or have ability to obtain certification by waiver within one year of employment.
    • Must live within sixty statute miles, by public roadway, of the Los Alamos County line within six months of hire.
    • Must possess, or ability to obtain within first thirty days of employment, and maintain a valid New Mexico Class D driver’s license.
    • Successful completion of pre-employment drug screening and subsequent random drug and alcohol screenings.
    • Successful completion of thorough background investigation, including FBI fingerprint check.
    • Successful completion of the pre-employment physical and psychological exam prior to commencing work.
    • Must not have been convicted of a felony, any domestic violence conviction, or other crime involving moral turpitude.
    • Must not have been convicted of a DUI within the last three years.

    Preferred Qualifications:
    • Associates degree from an accredited college or university.
    • DOE Q clearance.
