Police Sergeant is responsible for supervising patrol officers and agents as assigned and maintaining the chain of command within the operations of the department. Responsible for developing training programs for department personnel, directing special units, preparing special reports or projects as assigned, receiving and reviewing reports from officers, and assigning personnel in accordance to specific needs. Being a Police Sergeant requires a bachelor's degree in criminal justice and/or additional certifications and at least 5-7 years of law enforcement experience. Typically reports to a chief of police, captain, or lieutenant. The Police Sergeant manages subordinate staff in the day-to-day performance of their jobs. True first level manager. Ensures that project/department milestones/goals are met and adhering to approved budgets. Has full authority for personnel actions. To be a Police Sergeant typically requires 5 years experience in the related area as an individual contributor. 1 - 3 years supervisory experience may be required.     Position Summary:

    The primary purpose of the Sergeant, University Police position is to provide supervisory and enforcement skills in the commissioned law enforcement services of The University of Texas System.  Responsible for supervising police personnel engaged in law enforcement duties associated with the protection, safety, and welfare of students, employees, visitors, and property within the area under the control and jurisdiction of The University of Texas System.  Exercises independent judgment within limits prescribed by law, Rules and Regulations of the Board of Regents, institutional rules and regulations and Director of Police departmental policies and procedures.

     

    Position Key Accountabilities:

    Leadership and Administration  Provides leadership to and management of assigned personnel through clear direction, communications, development opportunities, and ongoing feedback. Supervises and participates in the policing of the property of The University of Texas System. Provides service, information, and direction to students, employees, and visitors. Ensures conformance to policies and procedures by checking quality of subordinate’s performance.  Keeps staff informed of changes in departmental policies and regulations and legal interpretation. Monitors police officers and public safety guards on assignments, reviewing, evaluating, and correcting performance.  Conducts formal and informal training for continual development of police officers. Performs office and administration tasks.

    Enforcement Functions  Preserves the peace by the use of all lawful means, interceding without warrant when authorized by law to prevent or suppress crime.  Executes all lawful process.  Gives notice to magistrate of offenses committed within the areas under the control and jurisdiction of The University of Texas System.  Arrests offenders with and without warrant where authorized by law. Investigates all criminal offenses, to detect and arrest criminals and to recover lost or stolen property.  Attempts to locate missing persons. Detects violations of the Transportation Code, makes violator contacts, and places violators in custody or issues citations or warnings.  Investigates motor vehicle collisions. Enforces Rules and Regulations of the Board of Regents.

    Additional Operations   Writes reports, analyzes workloads, and plans work schedules. Confers with law enforcement agencies on matters of mutual concern. Screens employment applications to determine eligibility. Conducts surveillance, internal and background investigations.  Executes court orders and serves warrants.  Testifies in court and before Grand Juries.

    Other Duties as Assigned   Other duties to include, but not limited to, emergency recall and/or may be required to remain onsite or work extended hours during man-made or natural disasters and unusual occurrences on campus.  Local or long distance travel may be required for training or other business purposes occasionally.

    Certification/Skills:

    All of the following:
    Peace Officer Commission certification by the University of Texas System.
    Posses Peace Officer License from the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE) and Valid (or ability to obtain) Class A, B or C Texas driver’s license.

    Minimum Education:

    In accordance with current levels of education for commissioned police officers of the University of Texas System as adopted by the Board of Regents.  Preferred Education: Some College.

     

    Minimum Experience:

    At the time the promotional examination is taken, applicant must have three years experience as a Commissioned Texas Peace Officer with the University of Texas System Police or two years experience as a Commissioned Texas Peace Officer with the University of Texas System Police  and one year of experience as a commissioned officer in another full service law enforcement agency immediately preceding the date of examination.  Preferred Experience: Four years experience as a commissioned police officer, which includes at least two years of experience as a commissioned police officer at a University of Texas System Police Department.

     

    Physical Requirements:

    Exerts up to 50 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 20 pounds frequently and/or up to 10 pounds constantly to move objects.

    Security Sensitive:

    This job class may contain positions that are security sensitive and thereby subject to the provisions of Texas Education Code § 51.215

    Residency Requirement:

    Employees must permanently reside and work in the State of Texas.
