REPORTS TO: Director of Expanded Learning

Position Summary

The Director of Summer Program Culture plays a vital role in collaboratively planning and executing the summer culture vision alongside the Director of Expanded Learning. This position focuses on fostering a sense of community and inclusivity within the school-based summer camp, ensuring an engaging and joyful experience for both staff and campers. The Director of Summer Program Culture will directly support the Summer Site Coordinator in implementing initiatives that enhance social inclusion, build relationships, and contribute to a positive camp environment.

About Education for Change Public Schools

Founded in 2005, Education for Change (EFC) is a charter management organization that was created as a partnership between Oakland Unified School District and the education reform community in order to leverage the flexibilities in charter law to facilitate greater innovation and to address the underperformance of our most vulnerable student populations. EFC is Oakland’s largest charter operator, serving over 2,700 students in the Fruitvale and Elmhurst neighborhoods of East Oakland. Five of six of our schools were formerly OUSD schools that converted to EFC to leverage the flexibility and agility provided by charter law for greater outcomes for our students.

Job Responsibilities

• Collaborative Planning: Work closely with the Director of Expanded Learning to develop and refine the summer culture vision. Contribute creative ideas and strategies to enhance community-building activities during the summer program.
• Inclusive Program Development: Design and implement inclusive programs and activities that cater to a diverse group of campers. Develop strategies to ensure all campers feel welcomed, valued, and included in the summer camp community.
• Staff Engagement: Foster a positive and collaborative work environment among staff through team-building activities and communication initiatives. Provide support and resources to staff members to enhance their ability to contribute to the positive culture of the summer program.
• Training and Development: Collaborate with the Director of Expanded Learning to develop training programs that emphasize the importance of building an inclusive and positive camp culture for Site Coordinators and other staff members. Conduct workshops and training sessions for Site Coordinators on topics such as diversity, equity, and inclusion.
• Community Outreach: Engage with parents, guardians, and the broader community to promote awareness of the summer program and its values.Organize events or informational sessions that involve families in the summer camp community.
• Event Coordination: Oversee the plan and execution of special events, celebrations, and themed days to enhance the overall camp experience. Coordinate logistics, activities, and resources for events aimed at fostering a sense of belonging and joy.
• Conflict Resolution: Address any conflicts or challenges related to camp culture promptly and effectively. Provide guidance and support to staff and campers in resolving interpersonal issues and promoting a positive atmosphere.
• Feedback and Improvement: Collect feedback from staff, campers, and parents to continuously evaluate and improve the summer program culture. Implement changes and enhancements based on feedback and observations.
• Communication: Establish clear and open communication channels with staff, campers, and parents to ensure everyone is informed and involved in the camp culture initiatives.
• Data Tracking and Reporting: Maintain records of program participation, feedback, and outcomes related to the summer culture initiatives. Prepare regular reports for leadership on the success and areas for improvement in the camp culture.
• Other tasks as assigned or necessary for program success.

About You

• Proven experience in community building, program development, or related roles.
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
• High emotional intelligence
• Understanding of diversity, equity, and inclusion principles.
• Ability to work collaboratively in a team and take initiative.
• Experience in conflict resolution and problem-solving.
• Knowledge of summer camp dynamics and educational environments is a plus.
• Experience in education leadership or as a site coordinator preferred

Requirements:

Department of Justice clearance based on fingerprinting submission.

• Proof of TB test within the last four years.

Work Schedule

40 hours, 5 days/week.

Work Hours: 8:30am-5:00pm.

Pre-Work Start Date: March 2, 2023

Summer Start Date: June 10 (Staff training week is full time 8:00-4:30 pm)

Last Program Date: July 19, 2024

Must be able to work full program

• The person is on call daily to support operations from 3:30-5:00pm.
