CNC Operator – Tool Room Machinist

Position Overview:

The CNC Operator / Tool Room Machinist will set-up and operates both CNC and manual machines including boring mills, vertical lathes, horizontal mills, and vertical mills to achieve close tolerances. Works with materials like steel, cast iron, bronze, and brass based on drawings and specifications.

Utilizes a range of machine tools (lathes, shapers, surface grinders, drill presses) for non-repetitive machining of workpieces. Conducts own inspections to ensure quality.

Sets-up and operates a planer mill independently, handling challenging set-ups involving blocking and aligning heavy and irregular-shaped parts. Works under minimal supervision to mill, drill, and bore various workpieces.

Key Responsibilities:

CNC Operator Responsibilities:

• Position and set up workpieces using cranes or manual methods.
• Utilize measuring devices for precision work according to drawings and specifications.
• Apply efficient speeds, feeds, and machining methods.
• Verify dimensions with measuring instruments.
• Operate manual and CNC machines safely.
• Follow industrial engineering programs and prioritize job assignments.
• Participate in the Employee Engagement Program and collaborate with work teams.
• Adhere to safety protocols and maintain high attendance standards.

Tool Room Machinist Responsibilities:

• Set up machine operations for parts requiring close tolerances.
• Verify conformance of machined workpieces using measuring instruments.
• Receive and organize materials for the tool room, initiating replenishment orders.
• Safely operate tool and cutter grinding equipment and maintain machines.
• Allocate work time based on job priority and communicate effectively with team members.
• Participate in the Employee Engagement Program and adhere to safety standards.
• Perform clerical tasks, oil and maintain machines, and keep tools and workstations orderly.
• Work from drawings, sketches, or verbal instructions for production and maintenance requirements.

Additional Responsibilities:

• Complete clerical work such as marking and dating travelers.
• Maintain machines, tools, and workstations in a clean and safe manner.
• Position workpieces using holding devices and verify their position.
• Select feed rate, cutting speed, depth of cut, and cutting tools.
• Sharpen tools using a bench grinder.
• Perform production work and report information as required.
• Undertake any other duties as assigned.

Physical Requirements:

• Must be able to stand 100% of the time.
• Job involves standing, walking, twisting, turning, reaching, bending, climbing steps, lifting, pushing, and pulling.
• Must be able to lift up to 50-pounds, and push/pull up to 50-pounds.

Minimum Requirements:

• High School Diploma or GED Equivalent
• Minimum 1 year of experience with CNC and Machine set-up / operating.
• Experience with Manual machining.
• Must be able to read and perform math calculations.
• Ability to use basic handheld measuring tools.
• Experience reading and interpreting drawings.
• The ability to handle multiple tasks and to prioritize their importance is required.
• Self-starter who can work independently and as part of a team.
• Attention to detail.

Desired Qualifications:

• 3 years of machining and CNC experience
