Product Development Director plans and directs the resources and processes required to implement the vision and strategy for new product development and product lifecycle management of existing products. Establishes research and concept development projects and capabilities to innovate new products, product enhancements, and product redesign. Being a Product Development Director conducts market analysis and interacts with customers and prospects to identify new markets, articulate the value proposition, define requirements, and lead the development of a product roadmap. Oversees new product development and collaboration with internal stakeholders, including marketing, sales, and manufacturing, to ensure that new and existing products support the organization's financial goals. Additionally, Product Development Director develops teams with the knowledge and expertise to fulfill product development objectives. Requires a bachelor's degree. Typically reports to senior management. The Product Development Director manages a departmental sub-function within a broader departmental function. Creates functional strategies and specific objectives for the sub-function and develops budgets/policies/procedures to support the functional infrastructure. To be a Product Development Director typically requires 5+ years of managerial experience. Deep knowledge of the managed sub-function and solid knowledge of the overall departmental function.   • Primary Duties & Responsibilities

     

      1. Identify and champion cross-BU business opportunities within the Networking Segment

      25%

      1. Work with the BUs to address strategic customer opportunities that require cooperation between multiple BUs within the Networking Segment.
      2. This can involve RFPs/RFQs as well as management-level interactions with customers.
      3. Ensure that the value proposition of the overall Networking Segment can be articulated and presented to customers.
      4. Influence the P&Ls of all of the BUs within the Networking Segment by rolling them up to the Segment level.  This includes budgeting, revenue, profit, CapEx, and cash flow.

       

      2)  Consolidate and influence Networking Segment Product Managers and General Managers to stimulate new value creation and shape overall product portfolios

      15%

      1. Trim and/or enhance product portfolios to meet the needs of the overall business.  On one hand, this may involve culling unprofitable products or creating products.  Conversely, it may involve promoting products in one BU that have strategic significant in enable profitable business with other BUs.
      2. Create new products in other areas of the value chain not yet addressed by the networking segment, even if these fall outside of the mandates of the existing BUs.
      3. Partner with R&D and Strategic Marketing to ensure that customer needs/values are incorporated into product design and marketing approaches.

      3)  Product evangelization 

      10%

      1. Represent all Networking Segment products at strategic customers.
      2. Maintain presentations that span all Networking Segment products and be effective at giving such presentations to customers or industry partners.
      3. Conduct research to define targeted customer segments and determine the key values that drive buying behavior.
      4. Develop product positioning and marketing themes

      4) Set Roadmaps for new customer types and strategic opportunities

      20%

      A)  Explore other parts of the value chain not yet addressed by Networking Segment BUs.

      B) Identify product opportunities within those other areas and ensure that they are launched within the BUs.

      5)  Incubate new ventures within Networking Segment

      20%

      1. Identify and drive resources to realize new ventures.  These ventures may be entirely within the Networking Segment, they may involve cooperation with other Segments, or they may involve partnerships outside of Coherent.

      6)  Represent Networking Segment in business development and M&A opportunities

      10%

      A)  Identify acquisition targets or partnership opportunities that fit within the Networking Segment charter.

      B)  Create or analyze business cases

      1. Structure and drive deals.

    Education & Experience

    • The ideal candidate will have significant business experience (Product Management, Engineering, Operations Management, R&D and/or Product Marketing) in a technical environment combined with and a track record of success.  10 years of experience in Product Management, Product Marketing, Sales, or Engineering Leadership roles in the networking industry is desired.

    Skills

    • Knowledge and understanding of financial instruments:  P&L, balance sheet, income statement
    • In-depth understanding of the value proposition in existing and new market segments
    • Development of product roadmaps
    • Ability to easily and successfully work with employees and customers in a multi-cultural, global team environment
    • Experience with problem analysis and resolution at the strategic and functional levels
    • Excellent interpersonal, communication and presentation skills
    • Good connections with influential members of the optical networking industry
    • Set a high standard of ethics, professionalism. leadership and competency

    Working Conditions

    • Base location is in an office in the San Francisco Bay Area. Travel up to 40% is anticipated.
