MassDEP seeks applicants for an Environmental Laboratory Assistant. This position is assigned to the Air Assessment Branch (AAB) in the Division of Air and Climate Programs and is located at MassDEP’s Wall Experiment Station, 37 Shattuck Street, Lawrence MA. In support of AAB’s Photochemical Assessment Monitoring Sites (PAMS) program, and under the supervision of AAB staff, this position will assist PAMS project members in the collection, preparation and analysis of samples and the process and review of PAMS data. Regular duties include extraction and analysis in a bench chemistry environment but will also involve collecting samples and checking on the status of instrumentation at field sites throughout Massachusetts. When not participating in the main laboratory assignment, the Environmental Laboratory Assistant will be trained and will assist in weighing and processing fine particulate (PM2.5) filter samples. The person must be able to use their own vehicle to drive to monitoring station locations (and will be reimbursed at MassDEP’s standard mileage rate). The person will periodically be required to perform other tasks in support of AAB activities, including assisting staff in site maintenance and set up.
This position is primarily designed for an active college level student or graduate following a science-oriented curriculum.
Specific duties for this position include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Accept sample transfer and document according to routine laboratory protocol.
- Prepare sample cartridges for extraction and analysis by High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC).
- Perform sample extraction according to EPA protocol and using best laboratory practices to avoid contaminating samples.
- Clean glassware, laboratory equipment, and laboratory benches.
- Prepare PM2.5 filter samples for gravimetric analysis.
- Perform gravimetric analysis to determine particulate concentration based on weight difference.
- Collect PM2.5 and other non-continuous samples and return them to the laboratory for analysis in accordance with QA guidance.
- Perform repairs and maintenance of scientific equipment at field monitoring stations.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Knowledge, in and/or experience and training in general physical science, especially chemistry or air pollution science.
- Knowledge, education and/or experience working in a laboratory environment.
- Experience working in a field environment.
- Basic understanding of mechanical systems and proficiency in the operation of hand tools.
- Applicants must have a valid Driver’s License.

Based on assignment, possession of a current and valid Massachusetts Class D Motor Vehicle Operator's license.
