Provides intellectual leadership and has made significant contributions to the field. May offer independent study opportunities and mentoring to students.     The H. Furlong Baldwin Library at the Maryland Center for History and Culture (MCHC) is offering a paid 12-week archival processing internship starting in January 2025. Sponsored by the Colonial Dames of America (CDA) Chapter I, the intern will arrange and describe the chapter's archives recently donated to MCHC.

    Chapter I was formed in 1892 and spearheaded by Mary Ann Washington Keyser (1841'1931), who became the chapter's first president. Members of the CDA trace their families to ancestors who held public office at the colonial level, were commissioned officers in the armed forces, or served in other capacities specified by the Eligibility List of the Society. Chapter I of the CDA supports charitable giving, historic preservation, and education in Maryland. Their archival collection includes 10 linear feet of correspondence, minute books, annual reports, membership lists, constitutions and by-laws, genealogical charts, scrapbooks, and photographs detailing the administration and activities of the organization from 1892 to the present.

    Responsibilities

    • Create an Excel to EAD spreadsheet inventory of the collection for import into ArchivesSpace;
    • Physically arrange and rehouse the collection into archival folders and boxes adhering to DACS (Describing Archives, a Content Standard) guidelines and MCHC best practices;
    • Create an ArchivesSpace finding aid to provide intellectual access to the collection;
    • Conduct research into the history of the organization and its founding members;
    • Give a presentation to CDA Chapter I membership at the conclusion of the internship;
    • Opportunity to contribute to the H. Furlong Baldwin Library's blog, underbelly.

    Skills & Qualifications

    • Currently enrolled as an undergraduate, pursuing a graduate degree in information studies, history, or a related program, or a recent graduate from such a program;
    • Strong communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills;
    • Writing proficiency;
    • Close attention to detail;
    • Proficient with technology and able to learn new systems and software;
    • Flexible and able to work with minimal supervision;
    • Must be able to commit 10 '12 hours per week;
    • MCHC will provide necessary training in archival processing.

    About The Position

    • Part-time/hourly: $2,500 stipend for 12 weeks of work, 10'12 hours per week;
    • Expected start date: January 2025;
    • The internship format is in person.
