    Assistant Professor

    JOB PURPOSE:

    The College of Engineering and Physical Sciences (CEPS) of the University of Wyoming includes 10 departments and the newly formed School of Computing. The College prides itself on research innovation, teaching excellence, industrial engagement, and broader societal impact. With a significantly increased budget, we have embarked on a transformational journey to become a Tier-1 Institution, recognized nationally for academic excellence and world-class research. This includes new state-of-the-art facilities and dedicated funding for research initiatives. We are hiring a cohort of new faculty across the College, and we seek to attract a diverse and inclusive group of talented early-stage faculty and established researchers.

    The Department of Mechanical and Energy Systems Engineering (MESE) at the University of Wyoming seeks outstanding applicants for two tenure-track appointments at the Assistant Professor level, starting no later than August 19, 2024. These hires will complement a cluster of five faculty hires over a two-year timeframe. These are full-time, 9-month benefitted positions at the University of Wyoming campus in Laramie, WY.

    ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT:

    The University of Wyoming Department of Mechanical Engineering has two ABET-accredited B.S. programs in Mechanical Engineering and Energy Systems Engineering, with a total enrollment of approximately 350 UG students. The Department also offers M.S. and Ph.D. programs in Mechanical Engineering. In a two-year timeframe, including these positions, the department anticipates bringing on a cluster of five new faculty members to bring our department faculty up to 13.

    In addition to these assets, the MESE department benefits from excellent on-campus High Performance Computing (HPC) facilities housed in the Advanced Research Computing Center (ARCC). The NCAR-Wyoming Super Computing Center allows researchers from the University to utilize a total of 160 million core hours annually on "Cheyenne," which is among the top 20 most powerful HPC facilities worldwide. The University's School of Energy Resources (SER) also provides funding opportunities to several MESE faculty working on energy related topics.

    This position is open to applications from candidates within mechanical engineering-related research focus areas of thermo-fluids, solid mechanics, materials, and design. However, candidates with experience and future research interest in experimental and/or computational fluid mechanics are particularly encouraged to apply.

    ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

    The candidate will be expected to:

    • Teach effectively at both graduate and undergraduate levels
    • Successfully mentor graduate and undergraduate students in research projects
    • Develop a strong, externally-funded research program distinguished by high-quality scholarship
    • Engage in service activities related to the department, college, university, and/or professional societies

    REMOTE WORK ELIGIBILITY:

    This position provides vital support to campus customers and requires the successful candidate be available to work on campus.

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

    • Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering or a closely-related field prior to the commencement of the appointment
    • Evidence of significant research accomplishments
    • Commitment to effective teaching
    • Excellent communication skills

    DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

    • Research expertise in experimental and/or computational fluid mechanics or other complementary research areas
    • Higher education teaching experience
    • Demonstrated success in procuring research funding
    • Ability to collaborate with faculty within the department and across departments
