    Brief Description of Duties

    The Division of Sciences and Mathematics (DSAM) within the College of Arts and Sciences at the University of the District of Columbia is seeking a Tenure-Track Assistant Professor of Mathematics to teach undergraduate mathematics courses designed for a diverse population of students. The incumbent will be required to prepare and deliver relevant curriculum to students in their courses, using a variety of teaching methods to include, but not limited to, lecture, class discussion, demonstration labs, and projects. Experience advising students and supervising undergraduate research projects is preferred. Candidate must possess a demonstrated record of scholarly activities. The faculty member is expected to participate in program, division, and college service activities.

    Essential Duties and Responsibilities

    • Teach undergraduate mathematics courses.
    • Participate in the ongoing development and assessment of the mathematics program.
    • Advise and mentor students on academic and career issues.
    • Prepare course materials and lesson plans.
    • Provide students an approved syllabus that includes course objectives and learning outcomes, teaching methodology, attendance policies in line with those of the institution, texts and readings, assignments and deliverables, timelines and evaluation criteria, and an outline of appropriate University policies.
    • Present enthusiastic, well prepared, organized, and clear lessons consistent with the course syllabus.
    • Deliver course content using a variety of teaching styles and provide relevant and engaging assignments that facilitate real-world applications of concepts covered.
    • Provide students with timely information and feedback on their academic progress in the course.
    • Maintain regularly scheduled office hours in order to advise and assist students.
    • Participate in professional development training on an ongoing basis.
    • Keep abreast of discipline related trends in instruction by reading current literature, collaborating with colleagues, and participating in professional conferences.
    • Plan, evaluate, and revise curricula, course content, and course materials and methods of instruction.
    • Collaborate with colleagues to address teaching and research issues.
    • Participate in program, division, and college service activities.

    Minimum Job Requirements

    • Ph.D. in Mathematics, Applied Mathematics, Statistics, or related disciplines is required.
    • Minimum of 3 years teaching experience at the college/university level.
    • Demonstrated evidence of the ability to work collaboratively on research projects.

    Collective Bargaining Unit (Union): This position is in the collective bargaining unit represented by National Education Association (NEA) and you may be required to pay an agency service fee through direct payroll deduction.

    Residency Preference: The Residency Preference Amendment Act of 1988, D.C. Law 7-203, created a system in which provides that any applicant for employment in the Career or Educational Services who is a bona fide resident of the District of Columbia may claim a residency reference at the time of application. An applicant selected for an appointment based on District residency will be required to submit no less than eight (8) proofs of bona fide District residency. Bona fide District residency must be maintained from the date of appointment to the position for seven (7) consecutive years. Failure to maintain bona fide District residency for the (7) year period will result in forfeiture of employment.

    Drug-Free Workplace: Pursuant to the requirements of the Drug-Free Workplace Act of 1988, the individual selected to fill this position will, as a condition of employment, be required to notify his/her immediate supervisor, in writing, not later than five (5) days after conviction of any criminal drug statute occurring in the workplace.

    Background Investigation: Employment with the University of the District of Columbia is contingent upon a satisfactory background investigation.  The determination of a "satisfactory background investigation" is made at the sole discretion of the University of the District of Columbia.  The University may refuse to hire a finalist, rescind an offer of employment to a finalist or review and may terminate the employment of a current employee based on the results of a background investigation.
