    About the Opportunity:

    The Chair reports to the President & CEO with management responsibilities for the Center for Music’s programs and operations. This senior staff member represents the institution to students, parents, funders, community leaders, music educators, arts organizations, institutions of higher education, volunteers, and the public at large. The Chair will implement and execute programs, policies, and strategy with the support and supervision of the President & CEO; develop long and short-term goals and performance measures; and determine budgetary priorities and ensure that they are met. Responsibilities include day-to-day operations as well as ensuring the long-term sustainability of the Center for Music.

    In addition to providing strong and visible leadership of the day-to-day operations of all aspects for the Center for Music, the Chair will work with committed faculty, staff and board members to create a vision and strategy for The Music Settlement’s successful future.

    The Chair will drive and participate in several ongoing initiatives in the coming years:

    • Increase the enrollment and continued financial sustainability of the Center for Music working within stated budget guidelines and strategic objectives.
    • Participate in the organization’s capital campaign to support the adaptive reuse and new construction of the current “Gries House” building on The Music Settlement’s University Circle campus.
    • Nurture a collegial and collaborative team of staff and teachers to maintain the high quality of existing programs, and create additional community outreach programs in line with the Center for Music’s strategic plan objectives.
    • Build a strong and engaging faculty to promote The Music Settlement in the community to all stakeholders, including prospective students, parents, teachers, agencies, partners, and funders.

    Essential Duties and Qualifications:

    In order to successfully drive the critical initiatives above, The Music Settlement seeks a Chair with prior demonstrated success. The successful candidate must have:

    • At minimum, a Master’s Degree in Music Performance, Music Education, or Management.
    • Educational and administrative leadership experience.
    • Eight to ten years’ experience in the musical instruction field (at least five of these years should be in management of educational instruction).
    • Strong organizational skills.
    • Knowledge of IT systems required by the position, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
    • A passion for the cultural arts, bringing definition and uniqueness to the offerings of the Center for Music.
    • Experience working with and relating to a broad and diverse faculty and customer base.
    • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
    • Proven ability to build community partnerships.
    • Prudent fiscal management, financial acumen, and experience developing and managing budgets.
    • An orientation to achieve strong results in both administrative and educational activities and services.
    • An ability to creatively problem-solve.
    • A charismatic, compassionate leadership style.
    • A desire to be highly visible among students, parents, faculty and staff.
    • An ability to foster collaborative teamwork, build strong morale, and encourage a respectful and productive work environment between faculty, staff, and students.

    Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

    • Provide artistic and operational leadership for the Center of Music in accordance with The Settlement’s vision and values, with responsibility for meeting departmental goals as defined in the strategic plan.
    • Oversee the operation of the Center for Music, including, but not limited to, budgeting, staffing, space usage, musical instrument preservation, loan of instruments, curriculum, and program design.
    • Oversee and evaluate all Center for Music staff, including instructors, in accordance with guidelines and policies established by the President & CEO and Vice President of Finance and Administration; designate responsibilities as appropriate.
    • Manage the Enrollment and Customer Service office and its staff to ensure accurate registration, the tracking of financial aid, and scholarship awards.
    • Work with the Director of Marketing to ensure accurate and timely information and data for publications, and the development of communications and marketing strategies.
    • Work with and report to the Board of Directors, as required.
    • Act as the representative of the Center for Music to the region and the greater markets served by The Music Settlement.
    • Work in tandem with, and contribute to the efforts of, the Development Department, the Senior Staff, and overall management team to design current and future strategies for organizational advancement, fundraising, mission enhancement, and community partnerships.
    • Assist Development staff, as necessary, in securing resources for the Center for Music by providing input into grant applications and fundraising initiatives.
    • Monitor the Center for Music operational records.
    • Maintain regular office hours and availability to staff and faculty, and attend regularly scheduled staff planning meetings and retreats.
    • Organize and oversee the Center for Music recruiting program to ensure the highest quality, integrity, and diversity of faculty and staff.
    • Meet annually with individual faculty and staff to discuss workload and performance evaluations.
    • Manage the Center for Music’s robust educational outreach and residency programs in public and private schools, and after-school facilities across Northeast Ohio. Work to establish new partnerships.
    • Occasional evening and weekend hours necessary to oversee programs and projects.
    • Support professional development of faculty and staff (e.g., research proposals, pedagogy, curriculum development).
    • The Chair shall agree to adhere to established personnel policies and practices of The Music Settlement.
    • All other duties, as assigned by the President & CEO.
