    Position Summary:
    This is a full-time, tenure-track academic faculty appointment in Criminal Justice, beginning August 2024. The successful candidate will be expected to teach a variety of criminal justice courses such as: Criminal Justice System, Criminal Law, Contemporary Issues in Criminal Justice, Ethics in Criminal Justice, and Understanding Crime and Criminal Behavior. This position also serves as the Coordinator of the Criminal Justice (CRJ) Programs. The successful candidate must have teaching experience, preferably at the community college level. The ideal candidate will also be a certified NYS General Topics Police Instructor with the NYS Division of Criminal Justice Services and a contributing instructor for our integrated Police Basic Training (PBT) certificate program courses.

    Examples of Duties:

    As a fulltime faculty member in the department, the successful candidate will also:
    • Use and develop a variety of effective teaching and assessment methods to engage student interest and address a variety of learning styles.
    • Integrate appropriate instructional technology into the classroom to enhance student learning.
    • Evaluate student work using clear criteria relevant to the course content and learning outcomes.
    • Maintain and submit accurate records according to published deadlines (i.e., grades, syllabi, enrollment reports).
    • Participate in the department schedule development process.
    • Assess student learning and develop plans to improve student learning based on student outcomes.
    • Advise and instruct students regarding programs of study, other institutions of higher education, lifelong learning resources, and effective study skills; refer students to support services. programs, resources, and other professionals as appropriate
    • Develop and update curriculum. including the ability to integrate multicultural perspectives and participate in the program review process.

    Minimum Qualifications
    • A Master’s Degree in Criminal Justice, Criminal Justice Administration, Public Administration, Police Science, or a closely-related field; Or Juris Doctorate degree
    • Relevant professional experience in one of the fields of criminal justice, such as criminal law, policing, probation, corrections, courts, or victim advocacy.

    And
    • Commitment to community college goals and objectives of providing quality programs and services for culturally, socio-economically, ethnically, and academically diverse students and students with disabilities; personal qualities to work effectively and with sensitivity in a multicultural environment; awareness of and commitment to the needs of non-traditional and/or re-entry students with diverse abilities and interests.

    Preferred Qualifications
     
    1. Exceptional academic scholarship in the discipline
    2. Professional experience that informs a well-rounded view of the criminal justice system and the policing profession from all stakeholders.
    3. Demonstrated ability to teach Criminal Justice courses at the community college level, using varied teaching methods that engage students in their own learning, including learning outcomes that motivate students to develop higher-order thinking skills, and ensure consistent and appropriate monitoring of student progress.
    4. Demonstrated approach to teaching that is student centered and supportive of diverse student needs
    5. A willingness to utilize diverse methods of teaching and to experiment with teaching methods/technologies to accommodate various student learning styles
    6. Ability to teach online courses.
    7. Certified NYS General Topics Police Instructor and specialty instructor with the Division of Criminal Justice Services.
    Salary:
    An initial starting salary of $53,400 - $66,900 will be commensurate with education, training, and experience per academic year with an excellent benefits package has been allocated for this position. This position is contingent upon adequate funding. 
     

    Assignment and Anticipated start date.


    The selected candidate will participate in campus-wide events beginning August 19, 2024. The assignment will include an annual base-teaching schedule of up to 25 semester hours of lecture or a combination of laboratory and lecture, with the equivalent of 5 semester hours of release time for Coordinator duties. Full time faculty members will advise up to 25 student advisees. If requested in excess of 25 students, full time faculty members will be assigned proportionate release time or overload pay.
