Description of the Department or Unit | The Department of Computer Science at Appalachian State University invites applications for two new tenure-track faculty positions at the rank of assistant professor beginning August 2024. The department seeks dynamic candidates who are committed to teaching excellence and to maintaining an active research program. The department has 19 full-time faculty members with interests that range from core areas to interdisciplinary collaborations. The Bachelor of Science in Computer Science program serves about 650 students and is accredited by the Computing Accreditation Commission of ABET. Approximately 25 students are enrolled in the Master of Science program with concentrations in Systems, Theory, Data Science, and Web & Mobile Programming. The department takes pride in an exemplary record of external funding enabling research and education projects as well as scholarships for student success. The department is recognized by state and regional businesses for providing quality education and several of our faculty have received prestigious teaching awards. Essential Duties and Responsibilities | Responsibilities include teaching undergraduate and graduate computer science courses, mentoring student research, maintaining an active program of scholarship, pursuing external funding, and embracing service activities to achieve the department's common goals. The normal teaching load is 3 courses per semester (typically 2 preparations). Instructors with exceptional scholarly output and external funding can negotiate for reduced teaching responsibilities. |

ABD with reduction in rank and salary: ABD will be considered for this position. Evidence of successful defense of the dissertation must be received by July 31 for a fall hire or November 30 for a spring hire. If confirmation of defense is not provided by the deadline, the candidate will receive a new one-year fixed-term contract and be hired at the rank of Instructor. The candidate's salary will also be reduced to a lower rate commensurate with other full-time instructors in the same department. However, if degree verification is provided before the end of the one-year fixed-term contract, the candidate will be returned to the rank of assistant professor with commensurate compensation beginning July 1 of the following academic year. No ABD consideration: Only candidates with an earned doctorate or terminal degree from an accredited institution will be considered for the position. Since ABD will not meet the minimum requirements, ABD will not be considered. |
