General Duties:
1. Conduct training (staff, clients, community groups).
2. Facilitate and administer educational activities, programs and services including:
- group sessions focusing on HIV prevention;
- individual intervention/counseling sessions;
- demonstrations on condom usage and negotiation skills.
3. Conduct outreach in the following settings:
- street;
- jails and prisons;
- other treatment facilities;
- community health fairs;
- community events (festivals and other celebrations).
4. Administer the Oral Rapid HIV test ensuring proper handling and processing procedures are maintained.
5. Other duties as assigned.
Knowledge: Familiarity with and/or knowledge of HIV/AIDS and other sexually transmitted infections. Two (2) to three (3) years experience working with or through service providers serving persons living with HIV/AIDS. Administrative experience desired.
Skills: The Outreach Specialist must have excellent interpersonal skills with an ability to establish and maintain effective communication with a variety of people including professionals, administrators, clients, agency staff, and the general community. Likewise, the Specialist must have excellent communication skills, oral and written.
The Outreach Specialist must be comfortable with and willing to go into neighborhoods and sections of the City of Memphis frequented by substance abusers, prostitutes, and criminals. Generally, these areas may be viewed as undesirable by the general public. Additionally, the Outreach Specialist must be able to interact with correctional staff and inmate populations. The Outreach Specialist must have the highest regard for client privacy and confidentiality as mandated by all appropriate state and federal legislation.
The Outreach Specialist must be willing to take advantage of training opportunities including certification as an HIV/AIDS instructor and other such designations appropriate to the job.
The Outreach Specialist must maintain a valid driver's license and eligibility to secure agency provided insurance.
The Outreach Specialist reports directly to the HIV Program Coordinator
