    Salary range: Full-time equivalent salary is expected to be between $200,000 and $250,000, but will not be lower than the current faculty salary. (This is a 50% fiscal-year appointment.)
    Percent time: This 50% fiscal-year appointment is for up to three years, including responsibilities over the summer, with the possibility of re-appointment contingent on performance.

    Position description

    The University of California, Santa Cruz seeks a dynamic and leadership-oriented member of the Senate faculty to support the Vice Provost for Academic Affairs (VPAA) in advancing faculty success, supporting faculty diversity, and advancing the educational mission of UC Santa Cruz by improving student learning and closing equity gaps. This is a half-time academic administrator position with an up to three-year renewable appointment reporting to the VPAA.

    The Associate Vice Provost for Academic Affairs (AVPAA) will be the academic lead for campus program learning outcomes assessment, in collaboration with the VPAA, the Associate Campus Provost for Academic Success, and the Assessment for Learning Excellence and Equity Center. The AVPAA will work with program faculty to guide them in the use of outcomes assessment data for program improvement, and will coordinate with the Faculty Director of the Teaching and Learning Center for pedagogical support for program faculty.

    Additional parts of the portfolio will be assembled based on the skills and interests of the appointee. Possible components could include: overseeing the Hellman Fellows program, which provides funding to assistant professors to support their success toward tenure; supporting AAAS SEA Change faculty diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives; supporting the Faculty Community Networking program; overseeing the EVC Fellows Academy; involvement with the Teaching and Learning Center, providing academic leadership for a particular initiative, such as advancing faculty interest in offering opportunities for online learning during summer; assisting with the Leadership Academy; academic leadership for the Arboretum and Botanic Gardens; academic leadership for the campus Student Experience of Teaching surveys (SETs); involvement in faculty conduct processes and informal resolution. It is expected that only a few of these topics would be taken on by the AVPAA, and the longer list is offered as a set of possible options. Additional options could be suggested by the AVPAA.

    As a representative of the Vice Provost and of the central administration, the AVPAA is expected to model the UCSC Principles of Community in their interactions with faculty, staff, students, and members of the community.

    DUTIES INCLUDE, BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO:

    • Working collaboratively with the Assessment Team and with faculty to assist programs with making changes in response to program learning outcome assessment results
    • Serving as a liaison between Academic Affairs, other units on campus, the administration, and external audiences
    • Promoting campus policies that support faculty diversity
    • Additional duties will depend on the particular items in the portfolio, with possible examples listed above

    Qualifications
    Basic qualifications (required at time of application)

    Candidate must be a member of the UCSC Academic Senate with tenure or security of employment (including emeritae/i/x faculty).

    Preferred qualifications
    • Experience with program learning outcome assessment, or other learning outcome assessment
    • Ability to communicate and work effectively with diverse campus constituents (faculty, students, researchers, administrators)
    • Ability to exercise discretion and sound judgment in dealing with confidential and sensitive issues
    • Knowledge of effective pedagogies and best practices in higher-education teaching and mentoring
    • Knowledge of equity-minded practices in higher-education teaching and mentoring
    • Experience with curriculum planning
    • Administrative/management experience in an academic setting
    • Experience in team building, communication, and interpersonal skills
