Psychiatrist evaluates, diagnoses and treats patients with mental illnesses through a combination of personal counseling (psychotherapy), psychoanalysis, hospitalization, and/or medication. Performs initial psychiatric assessments, develops individualized care plans, and implements treatment for the patient. Being a Psychiatrist prescribes psychopharmacological medications as needed. Monitors and records client progress, and amends treatment plan according to patient response. Additionally, Psychiatrist requires a MD degree. Must have completed a psychiatry residency. Typically reports to a medical director. Typically requires board certification by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology (ABPN). Requires a state license to practice. Under general supervision of the Medical Director, provides psychiatric evaluation, diagnosis, and treatment services for adults of the Charleston Dorchester Community Mental Health Center.
Exercise medical responsibility for psychiatric services for community mental health center, interviews, examines, diagnoses and treats mental disorders for clients, performs professional duties requiring analysis of broad problems and planning of the treatment of adults at the center.
