Psychiatrist evaluates, diagnoses and treats patients with mental illnesses through a combination of personal counseling (psychotherapy), psychoanalysis, hospitalization, and/or medication. Performs initial psychiatric assessments, develops individualized care plans, and implements treatment for the patient. Being a Psychiatrist prescribes psychopharmacological medications as needed. Monitors and records client progress, and amends treatment plan according to patient response. Additionally, Psychiatrist requires a MD degree. Must have completed a psychiatry residency. Typically reports to a medical director. Typically requires board certification by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology (ABPN). Requires a state license to practice.     Catawba Community Mental Health Center serves York, Chester and Lancaster Counties of South Carolina.

    Under the limited supervision of the Catawba Community Mental Health Center (CCMHC) Medical Director, provides psychiatric services to CCMHC patients. Performs professional duties requiring analysis of a broad spectrum of medically related problems. Plans various interrelated medical activities within the facility; responsible for medically related administrative functions in the clinic.     

    Responsibilities for this Position Title include but are not limited to:
    • Evaluates the need for, plans and provides psychiatric treatment for outpatient and emergency services for the patients of the Catawba Community Mental Health Center during a normal work week (37.5 hours).  
    • Consults and collaborates with staff (case managers and therapists) in formal (SPD, treatment teams), as well as, informal settings.  Assists Medical Director and Executive Director in assuring that clinical staff receive appropriate clinical supervision. Assists with staff training and acts as a community liaison with the local medical community. Meets with appropriate clinical supervisor(s) to review clinical and administrative needs of the clinic.
    • Provides supervision and guidance to Nurse Practitioner as needed.
    State Minimum Requirements:
    Licensed to practice medicine in SC. and completion of full residency (4years) in psychiatry.

    Catawba CMHC is also an approved site of the National Health Service Corps, (NHSC), which offers student loan repayment of up to $50,000 to employees of NHSC - approved sites. You must be a US citizen, you must be licensed to practice independently in the state where you are hired, and you must have unpaid government or commercial school loans.
