Public School Teacher prepares lesson plans and instructs students in an assigned school. Develops and implements grade appropriate course work, activities, and assessments to meet the academic needs of children in a K-12 classroom setting. Being a Public School Teacher evaluates and monitors student's performance. Assesses and documents students' progress. Additionally, Public School Teacher participates in development and implementation of Individual Education Plans for specific students. Resolves classroom issues and conflicts. May participate in implementing special programs for students. May supervise teaching assistants. Requires a bachelor's degree. May require specific state-level teaching license. Typically requires Basic Life Support (BLS) certification. Typically reports to a principal. The Public School Teacher occasionally directed in several aspects of the work. Pay rate of $18.36 a hour is only for NYS certified teacher assistants.
If you are uncertified you may start as a substitute teacher assistant at a pay rate of $14.20 a. hour.
Requirements
The Teacher Assistant will assist the classroom teacher with the implementation and delivery of education programs designed to meet the individual needs of the students.
The teacher assistant must be a high school graduate- He/She must be able to communicate effectively with staff, students and parents. He/She must be able to speak, read and write clearly and distinctly as well as have a knowledge of correct English, spelling, punctuation and grammar- He/She must understand behavior modification techniques, Child development and a knowledge of the learning principles associated with special education He/She must have the ability to understand, follow and implement oral written directions as well as the ability to work independently. The teacher assistant must be able to perform clerical duties follow lesson plans be creative, imaginative and cooperative in interactions with professional staff and students.
Responsibilities
1. Follow lesson plans as directed by the teacher (ex- supervise small group activities, provide individual instruction, assist in a variety of academic activities, supervise seat work, assist teacher in organizing or producing materials).
2. Follow through, deliver and implement group lessons as directed by the classroom teacher. The teacher assistant will assist the students in completion of materials assigned in work folders and instruct students to obtain goals/objectives identified by the classroom teacher.
3. Implement consistent, fair, and firm discipline techniques or behavior modification programs identified by the classroom teacher.
4. Develop positive working relationships with building administration, staff members, parents and students.
5. Share ideas, concerns and observations of individual students with the classroom teacher and professional staff.
6- Participate in ongoing communication with the teacher regarding the instructional program and the learning environment.
7: Substitute for the classroom teacher in case of absence.
8. Work independently and competently in unsupervised situations.
9. Respond to and deal with student's personal and interpersonal conflicts in an appropriate manner.
10. Consistently strive to develop age-appropriate behaviors for students.
11. Assist school professional staff in supervision outside classroom activity areas such
as the bathroom, cafeteria, playground, field trips, hallways and bus duties, etc.
12. Attend faculty meetings.
13. Attend in-service training programs and staff development programs as required.
14. Evaluate the student progress under the direction of the classroom teacher.
15. Assist the teacher in planning structuring and implementing individual education programs for students.
16. Perform duties and assigned tasks as directed by the classroom teacher.
