    Responsibilities

    RESPONSIBILITIES

    Demonstrates optimal patient care and personal safety utilizing established and accepted techniques of radiation safety to ensure quality care of all patients.

    1. Assists health physicists in the surveillance of all health physics activities, including personnel and environmental monitoring.

    1 1. Assists health physicists in consultation service to all departments of the Hospital on matters relating to radiation protection, safety and quality assurance.

    1 2. Distributes and collects personnel monitoring equipment; maintains personnel exposure records, notifies and investigates individuals and their supervisors of exposures approaching control limits and recommending appropriate remedial actions, and investigates their causes.

    1 3. Assists health physicists in radioactive decontamination products in case of accidents involving radioactivity both on-site and in response to off-site accidents that require emergency room services.

    1 4. Assists in radiopharmaceutical therapies to insure safe administration of doses, adherence to isolation and decontamination requirements, and release of patients and facilities afterwards. Insures that appropriate biopsy procedures are performed and completed.

    1 5. Assumes responsibility for maintaining the Radiation Safety Office, utilizing established and accepted policies and procedures of radiation safety office management.

    2 1. Prepares documents using typewriter and word processing.

    2 2. Provides secretarial support with health physicists. 2 3. Provides administrative support to health physicists. Maintains records of receipt, delivery and shipping of all radioactive materials entering or leaving Yale-New Haven Hospital.

    2 4. 2 5. Records data and compiles into statistical analyses and reports.

    2 6. Serves as a source of information on radiation safety programs at Yale-New Haven Hospital.

    2 7. Maintains facilities and equipment inventory.

    2 8. Contacts vendors for service and installation of safety equipment.

    2 9. Distributes and posts health and safety regulations. Assumes responsibility for Radiation Safety Laboratory measurements and quality assurance of equipment , utilizing established policies and procedures of radiation safety

    Operates and maintains equipment. Performs laboratory techniques to collect, test, package, store, transport and dispose of harmful and non-harmful waste. Conducts test procedures on sample material.

    3 1. Assists health physicists in the performance of area and patient radiation surveys based on age specific criteria (see Addendum).

    3 2. Assists health physicists in monitoring all devices capable of producing ionizing radiation from the standpoint of the safety of patients and Hospital personnel.

    3 3. Assists health physicists in the waste disposal program, including transport, storage and disposal records.

    3 4. 3 5. Assists health physicists in leak testing and inventory control of all sealed sources.

    3 6. Performs additional functions incidental to health and safety activities.

    Qualifications

    EDUCATION (number of years and type required to perform the position duties): Associates degree, preferably in Physics or Biology, or high school diploma with two (2) to four (4) years of related work experience.

     

    EXPERIENCE (number of years and type required to meet an acceptable level of performance): Zero (0) to two (2) years of related work experience.

     

    SPECIAL SKILLS: Regular, skilled use of radiation measurement instruments. Computer experience in using word processing, spreadsheet and database analysis. Typing speed is not critical. ACCOUNTABILITY (how this position is held accountable for such as goals achievement, budget adherence, or other areas of accountability): Responsible for the maintenance of the Radiation Safety Office for assisting Health Physicists in enforcing the Radiation Safety Standards. Periodic review by the Director of Radiological Physics.

    LICENSURE/CERTIFICATION:

     

    INFORMATIONAL SPECIAL WORKING CONDITIONS AND PHYSICAL DEMAND: Must be able to lift heavy objects (some over 30 lbs.); must be comfortable in working with radioactive materials and high radiation areas.
