  • Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory has an opening for a Radiation Control Technician to join the Radiation Protection Group in the Environmental Health & Safety Division. This position has general responsibility for radiation protection activities at Berkeley Lab, including surveillance of radiological work areas, radioactive material management, data/records management, radiological characterization and sample collection/analysis, air monitoring and sampling, and incident investigation and corrective actions.     Our focus in Radiation Protection Group is the compliance and technical field support of radiological work (radioactive materials lifecycle management, shipping and receiving of radioactive materials, and radiological worker training). The variety of on-site radiological hazards requires a Radiological Controls Technician that is adaptable, inquisitive, with broad technical knowledge, and is able to implement a variety of radiation protection strategies in a research environment. The opportunity to witness a first-of-its-kind event is an everyday occurrence at LBNL.

    What You Will Do:

    At the Radiation Control Technician 2 level:

    * Independently perform complex radiological work activities required to implement Berkeley Lab's Radiation Protection Program to assure safe and compliant radiation protection as set forth in Radiation Protections Group's policies and procedures.

    * Independently perform radiological surveys (radiation, contamination, and airborne radioactivity) of laboratory, construction areas, remediation sites and other work areas; generate associated documents, reports and audits in support of assigned area(s).

    * Perform release surveys of materials, equipment and property from areas controlled for radiological purposes to uncontrolled areas.

    * Evaluate radiological conditions within various types of facilities and work locations to support the development of radiologically work authorization, work plans, survey plans. Post/label areas and items controlled for radiological purposes.

    * Conduct and/or support assessments, audits and other measures needed regarding radiological incidents. Respond to contaminated personnel/areas and other radiological incidents and emergencies, and participate in corrective action.

    * Provide specialized radiological support during preparation, packaging, and shipment/transfer of radioactive materials, as well as during operation related to Material Control and Accountability, and Nuclear Material Management.

    At the Radiation Control Technician level 3 duties and responsibilities include those from the 2 level plus:

    * Works independently on routine assignments with little or no instruction from supervision or technical authority. Given limited and prescriptive program/project directions, is expected to perform major components in an ES&H project.

    * Applies knowledge, skills and experience to process and resolve more complex health physics situations or problems. May require limited instruction or mentoring from supervision or technical authority for complex and large tasks and assignments.

    At the Radiation Control Technician level 4 duties and responsibilities include those from the 2 level and the 3 level plus:

    * Works independently on all assignments with little or no instruction from supervision or technical authority.

    * Given broad and general program/project assignment with the expectation to manage assigned projects and programs independently with minor status updates with guidance from supervision.

    * Performs operations and tasks to carry out major components in an ES&H project or program.

    What is Required:

    Radiation Control Technician 2 Level:

    * Education, or combination of education and experience, in which advanced technical concepts and principles are acquired in the field of radiation protection/health physics.

    * 5 years of relevant experience in radiation measurement, radioisotope handling and radiation monitoring, of which 1 year is as a qualified Radiation Control Technician, Health Physics Technician, or Engineering Laboratory Technician.

    * 1 years as a DOE or NRC 3.1 DOD-qualification Radiation Control Technician, Health Physics Technician, Engineering Laboratory Technician, or equivalent certification. Achieve and maintain status as a DOE-qualified Radiation Control Technician.

    * Experience developing and providing technical advice and instructions, developing and preparing operational and quality assurance procedures, and other services needed for achieving radiation safety.

    * Comprehensive understanding of radiation measurement and radioisotope handling principles, including monitoring, analysis and radioisotope identification.

    * Ability to perform physical requirements of the position, including: routinely lifting and carrying up to 40 lbs; performing radiological surveys involving routine squatting, kneeling, climbing, bending, and twisting; and up to 2 hours per day of reaching for swipe and meter operations.

    Radiation Control Technician 3 Level:

    * 10 years of relevant experience in radiation measurement, radioisotope handling and radiation monitoring, of which 3 to 5 years are as a qualified Radiation Control Technician, Health Physics Technician, or Engineering Laboratory Technician.

    * Extensive technical expertise, including understanding and application of specialized principles of radiation safety (e.g. monitoring and radioisotope identification), radiation measurement and radioisotope handling principles.

    * Required to achieve and maintain status as a DOE-qualified radiation control technician (RCT).

    * Previous DOE/*NRC 3.1/**DOD-qualification radiation control technician (RCT)/ Health Physic Technician (HPT)/ Engineering Laboratory Technician (ELT), or equivalent, is required.

    * Must have full and comprehensive understanding of radiation measurement and radioisotope handling principles including monitoring, analysis and radioisotope identification.

    Radiation Control Technician 4 Level:

    * 15 years of relevant experience in radiation/health physics programs, of which 5 years are as a qualified RCT/HPT/ELT.

    * Comprehensive experience in developing radiation protection procedures, technical work documents; which included providing technical advice and training instructions.

    * Preferred experience in leading programmatic level work scope (MC&A, Qualification Program, DOT, etc.).

    Desired Qualifications at all Levels:

    Radiation Control Technician 2 Level

    * Current HAZWOPER 24 Hour

    * DOT/IATA qualifications

    * Full-face Respirator qualifications

    Radiation Control Technician 3 Level

    * Current HAZWOPER 40 Hour

    * Current DOE Core Qualification

    Notes:

    * This is a full-time career appointment, non-exempt (hourly paid) from overtime pay.

    * This position is represented by a union for collective bargaining purposes.

    * Salary will be determined based on range by collective bargaining agreement.

    * This position will be hired at a level commensurate with the business needs and the skills, knowledge, and abilities of the successful candidate.

    The Radiation Control Technician Level 2 position is expected to pay $35.96 - $39.64 per hour, which fits within the full salary range of $32.28 - $47.00 per hour for the 747.2 - Radiation Control Tech II position. Salary for this position will commensurate with the final candidate's qualification and experience, including skills, knowledge, relevant education, certifications, plus also aligned with the internal peer group.

    This Radiation Control Technician 3 position is expected to pay $43.90 - $48.48 per hour, which fits within the full salary range of $39.31 - $57.65 per hour for the 747.3 - Radiation Control Tech III position. Salary for this position will commensurate with the final candidate's qualification and experience, including skills, knowledge, relevant education, certifications, plus also aligned with the internal peer group.

    This Radiation Control Technician 4 position is expected to pay $49.64 - $54.81 per hour, which fits within the full salary range of $44.46 - $65.16 per hour for the 747.4 - Radiation Control Tech III position. Salary for this position will commensurate with the final candidate's qualification and experience, including skills, knowledge, relevant education, certifications, plus also aligned with the internal peer group.
