JOB SUMMARY :
To perform, and assist in, a wide variety of general, administrative, operational, technical, and clerical work in support of the recreation/leisure services function of the Parks and Recreational Department; and to provide information and assistance to the public regarding departmental policies and procedures. Assist in the designing, organizing, and implementation of recreational programs and activities.
Perform other duties as assigned.
DISTINGUISHING: CHARACTERISTICS:
This is the entry level class in the recreation/leisure services series and is distinguished from higher level classes by the performance of routine administrative, operational, technical, and clerical duties. Under the flexing staffing concept, positions assigned to the Recreation Technician I class may reasonably expect to progress to the Recreation Technician II level (salary range 20) with on-the-job training, experience, and satisfactory job performance.:

Receives immediate supervision from higher level staff. May provide lead supervision to lower-level staff.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities::
Function as receptionist assisting the public over the telephone or in person by providing routine information pertaining to policies and procedures of assigned division, refer inquiries as appropriate.
Prepare and review a variety of memorandums, correspondence, reports, public notices, bills, and documents as assigned, complete various forms.
Perform a wide variety of general clerical work including the maintenance of accurate and detailed records and files, verifying accuracy information, researching discrepancies, and recording information.
Sort and file documents and records, maintaining alphabetical, index, and cross-reference files.
Research and compile easily accessible information and data for use in statistical and financial reports; maintain a variety of statistical records; check and tabulate statistical data.
Contact the public and outside agencies to acquire information and make referrals.
Participate in/assist in the operation and implementation of various recreational/athletic activities. Instruct a variety of classes for preschool, youth and adults including arts, crafts, sports, special interests, health and fitness, outdoor activities, and socialization classes.
Secure the safety of the facility and facility patrons, including opening and closing facility and overseeing the care and use of center by patrons.
Plan, organize and lead a wide variety of recreational activities including adult and youth sports, aquatics, cultural events, outdoor activities, special events and senior services.
Organize, schedule, and supervise sports programs, teams, leagues, classes, workshops, and all activities for the facility.
Maintain records of activities and patron participation
Support the City’s policies, goals and objectives and work with management and other staff to ethically achieve such goals and objectives; ensure compliance with safety procedures.

Answer questions and provide information to the public about programs and activities.
Coordinate with school officials and community groups regarding program offerings and use of services and facilities

QUALIFICATIONS::
Knowledge of::
English usage, spelling, grammar, and punctuation.
Modem office practices, procedures, methods, and equipment.
Operation and use of recreation equipment used in various games, sports, and other recreational activities.
Basic principles and practices of recreation program development, rules and regulations governing various competitive athletic games.
Ability to::
Learn and correctly interpret and apply the policies and procedures of the function to which assigned.
Learn and apply rules of various athletic/recreational activities and games.
Perform general clerical work including maintenance of appropriate records and compiling information and reports.
Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
Type and transcribe at a speed necessary for successful job performance.
Maintain effective audio-visual discrimination and perception needed for:
- Operating assigned equipment
- Communicating with others.
Maintain mental capacity, which allows the capability of:

- Participating in/performing various athletic/recreational activities
- Standing or sitting for extended periods of time
- Operating assigned equipment.
- Frequent walking, stooping, kneeling, standing, and sitting for extended periods of time.
- Elevating and moving heavy equipment and materials up to fifty (50) pounds or more.
Understand and carry out oral and written directions. Perform simple mathematical calculations.
Establish and maintain cooperative-working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
Work effectively with clientele from various ethnic, age, and socio- economic groups.

Experience and Training Guidelines:
Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:
Experience::
One (1) year of related clerical and athletic or recreational programming experience is highly desirable including fitness, sports, aquatics, customer service, arts and crafts, youth, teen, and adult programing.
Software Programs: Microsoft Word, Excel, or similar types of programs.
Training::
Equivalent to completion of the twelfth grade.
Lifeguard certification within six (6) months of appointment.
Texas Driver’s License within ninety (90) days of appointment.
