Referral Specialist processes insurance pre-verification for hospital admissions or specialty service office visits. Gathers pertinent information from patients, insurance carriers, financial counselors, and other staff to confirm the patient's financial obligations for services. Being a Referral Specialist acts as a liaison between hospitals, clinical staff, health plans, providers, and patients to process referrals. Verifies insurance coverage and obtains required authorizations when necessary. Additionally, Referral Specialist documents referrals, communications, actions, and other data in an information management system. Generates and distributes all applicable forms, notifications, and paperwork. Requires a high school diploma. Typically reports to a supervisor. The Referral Specialist works under moderate supervision. Gaining or has attained full proficiency in a specific area of discipline. Grants Specialist 14/Departmental Specialist

  • This position functions as a professional specialist for highly complex LARA grants and contractual services.  Currently the significant portion of grants include: MIDC (approximately 120 grants totaling approximately $155 million, CRA totaling for FY23 at 55 grants (50 Medical Marihuana Operation and Oversight Grant (MMOOG), 5 active Veteran Marijuana Research Grant (VMR)) totaling approximately $42.5 million, and MPSC (15 Low Carbon Energy Infrastructure Enhancement and Development grants and 11 Michigan Energy Assistance Program grants) totaling approximately $105 million.  The function of this position is to provide financial reporting and other grant management responsibilities, including but not limited to, functions in SIGMA and EGrAMS (Electronic Grants Administration & Management System) for LARA programs.  The responsibilities are very complex and have a high financial impact with LARA.  This program requires development of specialized, complex calculations with many variables, along with policies and procedures for reporting of costs associated with each grant.  In addition, this position is responsible for administering contractual services and commodities within the department.  This involves the development of contracts on behalf of LARA bureaus.

     Education
    Possession of a bachelor's degree in any major.
     
    Experience
    Four years of professional experience, including two years equivalent to the experienced (P11) level or one year equivalent to the advanced (12) level.

    Equivalent combinations of nonprofessional experience, identified by the appointing authority and approved by Civil Service that are represented by subclass codes, will be accepted for classified, professional experience equivalent to the P11-level and above. The nonprofessional experience must be related to departmental programs and services that provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.

    Certain positions may be assigned subclass codes and individuals appointed must possess the required specialized experience.
