Job Summary
The Trauma Registrar is responsible for data collection, both abstracting and analyzing, data entry, and data completion of the trauma patient population. He/she is also responsible for data submission/distribution/report generation to/for the appropriate parties within the designated
time frame. This position assists with projects under the direction of the Trauma Program
Manager as indicated. Primary Duties:
Performs basic data collection of demographics and coding of clinical and follow-up data from all sources into trauma registry database.
Interacts with physicians, nurses, and other members of the trauma team and trauma patients to perform trauma registry functions.
Keeps registry current as defined by the American College of Surgeons (ACS).
Determines appropriateness of patient entry into the Trauma Registry based on guidelines in the American College of Surgeons “Resources for the Optimal Care of the Injured Patient” as well as the National Trauma Data Standard.
Provides high quality data entry by abstraction of required state and national trauma data elements from the patient chart in real time and retrospectively.
Participates in quality assurance, data validation, and improvement activities to ensure accuracy of data collection and timely submission of data according to State Trauma Registry and the American College of Surgeons Optimal Resource Document for Trauma Centers.
Understands mapping concepts and validates mapping of registry software for Trauma Quality Improvement Program (TQIP), National Trauma Data Bank (NTDB), and the state.
Resolves routine coding issues/problems and appropriately seeks assistance from Trauma Program leadership and/or Trauma Registry vendor when appropriate.
Recognizes patterns of mechanism and injury during case abstraction in order to contribute to opportunities for injury prevention and community safety.
Reports data in formats such as Excel and/or PowerPoint for both internal and external consumption (includes statistical,clinical, and research data).
Job Requirements:
Completion of ICD-10 Coding Program or equivalent experience.
If not previously completed, within one (1) year of hire attend:
Qualifications
Bachelor's degree required. In lieu of education, leadership may consider an Associate’s degree and 5 years of applicable experience. If degree is in nursing, graduate from a nationally accredited nursing program preferred, including, but not limited to, Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE), Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN), and National League for Nursing Commission for Nursing Education Accreditation (NLN CNEA).
Minimum of two years experience in operational process improvement, clinical, or healthcare management setting preferred.
Lean Six Sigma Green Belt or equivalent required within two years of hire and Certified Professional in Healthcare Quality (CPHQ) or equivalent required within three years of hire.
If a licensed registered nurse (RN), currently hold an unencumbered RN license with the State Board of Nursing where the practice of nursing is occurring and/or possess multistate licensure if in a Nurse Licensure Compact (NLC) state. Obtains and subsequently maintains required department specific competencies and certifications. Quality improvement/assurance personnel with nursing backgrounds can maintain their license without seeking additional hours based on role’s responsibilities. Other departments may or may not require certifications as directed by department leadership.
