Job Description
Position: Director of Religious Education for St. Patrick Parish, Malvern (Part Time)
The primary responsibility of the Director/Coordinator of Religious Education is to, under direction of the pastor, administer the Parish Religious Education Program (PREP) for the parish children who attend public or non-Catholic private schools.
- Oversees the development of the PREP program in conformity with the guidelines of the
Office for Catechetical Formation of the Archdiocese of Philadelphia
- Recruits and trains catechists and aides for their role
- Provides on-going support for and guidance of catechists
- Provides textbooks and materials for use in the classroom
- Provides curriculum and lesson guidance to catechists
- Creates a yearly PREP calendar of classes and events
- Creates and updates handbooks for catechists and families in the program, in accordance with the directives of the Office of Catechetical Formation
- Provides access and inclusion for children with special learning needs
- Plans and executes semi-annual events/prayer opportunities for children and parents outside of regular classes (e.g. Stations of the Cross, Prayer Services, Family Mass)
- Coordinates regular events/activities for children post-Confirmation
- Participates with membership in the PD/CARE professional association of the Archdiocese
The St. Patrick Parish Religious Education Program meets on:
Sunday mornings from 10:30 to 11:35
Monday afternoons from 4:45 to 6:00
A Family Catechesis option meets 7 times a year on Sunday mornings from 10:30 to 11:30.
Sacramental Program (First Penance, First Communion, Confirmation)
- The Director/Coordinator of Religious Education oversees the coordination and sacramental preparation of parish school age candidates who attend the Parish Religious Education Program, Catholic school or private Catholic academies.
- Schedules the dates for First Penance and First Communion with the pastor
- Schedules and coordinates sacramental meetings for parents of sacramental children
- Communicates all information to parents of sacramental children, catechists and principal, teachers in the parish school
- Coordinates retreat experiences for children preparing to receive sacraments
- Coordinates the liturgy for the celebration of the sacraments with the pastor and parish director of liturgy
- Coordinates the initiation process for unbaptized children or children baptized in another Christian faith who are of catechetical age
- Coordinates and oversees preparation for older baptized Catholic children or teens who seek the reception of the Sacraments of Penance, Eucharist and/or Confirmation
- Oversees the recording of sacrament information in the parish sacrament registers
Children's Liturgy of the Word (CLOW)
- Coordinates the CLOW at the 9:30 Sunday Mass
- Recruits leaders and prepares them and the weekly presentation
- Creates a schedule of weekly leaders
- Prepares the meeting space'
Minimum Qualifications
- Must be practicing Catholic in good standing
- A. in Theology/Religious Education or related educational field and/or certificate in ministry or theology from a Catholic Institution of higher learning. Relevant professional and volunteer experience will be taken into consideration.
- Availability during PREP class meting times
- Ability to instruct and help others instruct children in the teachings of the Catholic Church in their entirety and fullness
