We are seeking a highly motivated and customer-oriented individual to join our team as a Kayak Shop Rental and Retail Assistant. As a Shop Assistant, you will play a crucial role in providing exceptional customer service and preparing kayakers and stand-up paddleboarders for their adventures on the water. This ocean-minded and conservation focused position is a great way to stay out of a cubicle and work on your leadership/teambuilding skills. Flexible hours and beautiful outdoor work environment make this the ideal seasonal employment opportunity for any ocean lover! The perfect candidate is knowledgeable and enthusiastic about our local Monterey Bay area, possesses customer service experience, is comfortable speaking in front of and leading large groups, works well with others, is punctual and dependable, has a risk-management mindset, is CPR certified (or intends to be certified within one month of hiring date) and loves working outdoors. Kayaking skills are a bonus, but not a requirement.
Responsibilities:
- Assist customers with kayak gear, teaching basic kayaking maneuvering and helping customers launch rental equipment
- Monitor ocean and weather conditions and plan the day's rentals accordingly
- Maintain the cleanliness and organization of the shop floor, shelves, and displays
- Perform basic math calculations to calculate discounts, sales tax, and totals
- Communicate effectively with customers and colleagues (multilingual skills are encouraged but not required)
- Book tours and rentals through an online reservation system; answer phone inquires about paddling in the Santa Cruz Yacht Harbor and Monterey Bay
Skills:
- Strong customer service skills with the ability to engage and assist customers effectively
- Excellent organizational skills to maintain a clean and well-organized shop environment
- Basic math skills for accurate transaction processing and inventory management
- Knowledge of product demos to effectively showcase merchandise features
- Ability to sell products by highlighting their unique qualities and benefits
