    The Steadman Philippon Research Institute (SPRI) is known throughout the world for our research into the causes, prevention, and treatment of orthopaedic disorders. We are committed to solving orthopaedic problems that limit an individual's ability to maintain an active life. 

     

    Scientists and researchers for the Center for Regenerative and Personalized Medicine (CRPM) are underway on several research projects, including SPRI’s federally funded clinical trials, preclinical projects and research programs sponsored by philanthropy. CRPM is conducting research supported by the National Institutes of Health (NIH), Department of Defense (DoD), industry and foundation grants and awards. The team employs six full-time PhDs of whom are principal investigators and program directors for CRPM’s research categories. The team is led by Johnny Huard, PhD, who also serves as SPRI’s Chief Scientific Officer.


    JOB SUMMARY: Under the supervision of a senior scientist and/or CRPM director(s), the Research Associate performs semi-independent research within well-defined guidelines. These projects require a higher level of knowledge in stem cells and skeletal tissue biology as well as consistent innovative thinking. The candidate will also operate research equipment, take initiative to learn new techniques, and assist in preparing proposals for funding agencies.


    PRIMARY JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

    • Design, plan, conduct and coordinate experiments in support of various research projects. 
    • Contribute high quality data for research grants, manuscripts, and presentations.
    • Evaluate, select, and apply standard techniques of routine research; maintain detailed data records in lab notebook.
    • Mentor junior staff, providing troubleshooting with laboratory techniques and day-to-day laboratory experiments.
    • May assist in educational activities of SPRI with appropriate staff scientists and research interns.
    • Use computers and laboratory or technical equipment to perform data analysis, statistical analysis, and technical evaluation of research experiments and results, with knowledge of few software programs (NIS Elements, Photoshop, Image Lab, ImageJ, and Prism).
    • Summarize results for inclusion in scientific publications.
    • May assist in writing proposals to funding agencies and proofreading abstracts and manuscripts for scientific publications and presentations. 
    • Notify appropriate personnel when equipment issues arise.
    • Work from developed laboratory Standard Operations Procedures (SOP) and follow safety standards within the laboratory.
    • Perform phlebotomy when requested, and if properly trained and credentialed.
    • Assist with administration and execution of clinical research and clinical trials as needed.
    • Travel between SPRI laboratories, as needed.
    • Follow policies and procedures established in the SPRI Employee Handbook; adhere to SPRI safety policies.
    • Maintain a personal commitment to the Steadman Philippon Research Institute mission and values.
    • Other duties as assigned. 

    Requirements

    Technical

    • Master’s degree in cell biology or biomedical engineering, or bachelor’s with equivalent experience, is required.
    • Two years of relevant experience (Master’s degree is equivalent to two years of experience). Preference is given to those with experience in orthopaedic-related fields and those with familiarity of laboratory techniques and software analysis programs listed.
    • At least four of the following skills: Ribonucleic acid (RNA) and protein analysis, analytical gel electrophoresis, PCR, quantitative real-time RT-PCR, enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), western blot, flow cytometry, microscopy, histology/immunohistochemistry, histomorphometry, and cell/stem-cell culture maintenance, stem cell differentiation assays, cell-based assays, gene editing techniques, and/or biomaterials for drug delivery or tissue engineering.
    • Demonstrates knowledge and understanding of disease pathways and disease-related biological targets.   

    Administrative

    • Must be a self-starter and demonstrates creativity and independent judgment.
    • Has exceptional interpersonal skills and the ability to work with others in a collaborative and flexible manner.
    • Must be adaptable to unexpected changes and possess strong organizational, verbal, and technical writing skills. 
    • Ability to manage and complete multiple projects simultaneously while working under stressful conditions.  

    General

    • Ability to handle confidential/sensitive information and exercise good professional judgment.
    • Strong initiative and ability to work effectively under general supervision.
    • Translate the organization’s vision and values into day-to-day activities, behaviors, and decisions.
    • Ability to represent SPRI in a mature and professional manner.  

    Supervisory Responsibilities: This position does not supervise staff.

      

    CLASSIFICATION/BENEFITS: Full-time, year-round non-exempt position. Hiring range $26.00 - $33.00 per year based on qualifications.
